320d engine at problem, very loud noise at idle

320d only one belt. And it gone but come back after one month

if putting silicon helps, it is confirm belt. as i say it is the brand that matters. i tried Gates belt, Japanese belt but Dayco is the most quiet one. who can tell me what BMW is using?

BMW certainly either trying to reduce complexity, reduce costs in that single belt design, really trust modern belt durability or just making one more way for the UDM to masuk workshop more often

Shine a strong torch on your belt and flex it in your fingers. Try to find any surface that seems "glazed" or shiny. That may give a hint as to what is rubbing against the belts and causing the squeaking. It may be possible that one of the pulleys may be out of alignment.

Then I switch off the engine and sprayed the tensioner (the middle one), the noise gone...so I think it is the tensioner.

nice trouble shooting... spraying on the tensioner at where? the black plastic roller? usually the sound is coming from the back of the belt (flat portion) that contact with the tensioner. not the V profile that contact with inner pulley. when u spray, it might also lub the belt.

to confirm, when during cold start, spray the back of the belt at any point. if cicak stop partying...then u know what is the problem right?

btw, does the tensioner vibrate heavily when running? usually within +/-3mm movement. if too much, it will also cos noise to do tension not consistent. if that is the case, usually the crank pulley is the problem where the damping is out. the crank pulley is not a solid metal, it has rubber moulding in between.

Guys, you think you had it bad? I sent my car in (yea to Quill as well incase you were wondering) and the noise comes back just after a few days...sigh it's so annoying I'm losing hope in all BMW workshops. I've ripped them royally for not fixing it permanently and even cited mental and physical torment from this. Just unloaded a fair bit of silicone spray on all pulleys and pray tomorrow morning does not greet me with 'lord cicak'. Am actually quite embarrassed with the noise and it really shouldn't be an issue us bmwers have to deal with. Thankfully I'm not alone in this and will keep you all posted on mr silicone spray project. If all else fails I'll be writing to BMW Malaysia for some serious retribution..

Belt change under warranty claim or on your own? If under warranty, how?

it seems that some forumer is getting their belts change already. For your information, my SA still yet to call me on the status of the parts. First timer owning a BMW and have to live this this kind of service. Am very disappointed.

it is a good sign. but if they change the same type of belt or quality as stock, then the lord cicak will come again. i know it is under warranty. but it keeps comming back even after changing belt, i rather get myself a different belt to try out. it is less than RM150 and save time and avoid sleepness night.

tensioner is design to last very long at least 60K and the noise usually not cicak or high pitch and will not go away after warm up/hot. it is more like metalic noise if it is bad. belt is the most likely hood. too bad no one can see who made those OE belt.

hi guys, for sharing, i have also gotten my belt replaced this week. so far, the irritating squeek/rub on cold startup has disappeared.

my SA shared the BMW worldwide bulletin with me, that has gone out to indicate that a replacement "noise resistant" belt will be issued sometime in Q3 this year, as a fix to those having issues. Looks like a known and common issue. Interesting that only 320d guys have reported this so far.

fyi, mine was replaced like-for-like, because the upgraded belt apparently hasn't reached our shores yet.

there u go, finally BMW know what's wrong with it. as i said it is the belt giving 'lord of cicak'. hopefully the stocks with come soon for you all.
