I think the primary argument is not on if a malaysian is sent to space, but how.
Example:
if proton decided to start all it's production in china and import it's cars back to malaysia, can they call it a malaysian made car because the name is from Malaysia and so is the funding.

The main argument that is going on here is
Who's space program is this.
If it was a genuine space program with predefined goals set then it would be classed as such.
if it is a former F1 driver with the goal of eating nasi lemak and drinking teh tarik then is it really a space program or a taxi ride?
What is the end goal and is it realistic.
if your end goal is just to put someone in space, then this has been achieved.
if your end goal is to do something for the betterment of mankind and malaysia, then this has not yet been achieved.

IMHO, we Malaysians especially the politicians have been doing things without a proper objective. The big question is, where do we want to go from here? Remember that this is supposed to be a one-time-only launch for Malaysia, and all of the sudden the politicians and leaders got so excited that they wanted it to a continous "program". And most of the time, we did it because of pride and also to boost the self-esteem of the Malaysian people. Look at what happened to Proton? Because of "pride", the rakyat will eventually lose. When we include "pride" in whatever we do, be prepared to pay the price. Having said this, please don't get me wrong. I am not against the space program. But, we must have a clear objective. From the politicians point of view, this is very good for their political mileage. And also, Malaysia must send a man to space before 2020. Because Tun Dr. Mahathir also is ageing, well, this is definitely the best time to do this. From the rakyat's point of view, please don't waste our money unnecessarily. If we want to have a space program, then do it properly. If we have to spend, then spend.

lets call a spade a spade... its just another typical Malaysian stunt without any substance. Its no different from that stunt on flying our Proton car to the North pole..total waste of money and what does it prove?

Astronauts are trained vigorously both mentally and physically.
It normally takes 1-year training program then they are eligible for a flight assignment about 1 year after completing the basic training program.

The novice astronauts are given a full range of basic science and technical courses, including mathematics, Earth resources, meteorology, guidance and navigation, astronomy, physics and computer sciences. Candidates also receive training in land and sea survival training, scuba diving, and space suits.

Astronauts have to train for every possible emergency. They also need to become familiar with the spacecraft and instruments that they will be using and the tasks that they expect to perform before they go into space.Rookie astronauts may spend as long as 18 months training for a mission. Astronauts who already have traveled in space may need only 6 months of training before they are ready to fly again.

Finally as quoted by the Canadian Space Agency for the purposes of the ISS, the
Spaceflight participants are individuals (e.g.: astronauts from non-partner space agencies, engineers, scientists, journalists, teachers, filmmakers, tourists, etc.) who are sponsored to travel to the ISS by one or more ISS partners. They are not professional astronauts with any of the ISS partner agencies.

I sincerely think our 'angkasawan' did not train for the 2 years.. quite the participant then isn't he?

Whether the deal was a pay off or set off isn't the point...our monies went into it directly or indirectly, and for no purpose we can be proud of..except to say our Malaysian Brother got into space....so what...they sent a chimpanzee into space in 1961!

People with mother tongue other than English and Russian trying to explain to other people with also not their own mother tongue !! what is An astronaut or cosmonaut mean to them .......... what a joke when doctor, engineer, lawyer, businessman , salesman trying hard to satisfy their own need for word not from their own mother tongue

I love Wikipedia for word of astronaut or cosmonaut

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astronaut

Many thing happen around us simply will not satisfy everybody ........... so we complain

Cheers

1ton jack also cost RM5k...how to be satisfied...kekekkekkekekke

especially when they use up our money on infantile pursuits such as this instead of enriching and enhancing its people's standard of living...

Despite all these, the ruling party still wins 2/3 rd majority. Always........
dulu, kini dan selamanya
Nobody dares to deny their 2/3 rd majority. Why not 1/2 majority?
Scared aah..? Only then we might see huge changes.
Amazing..
Amazing..
Amazing..

ekekekekeke..

Best slogan for our space programme? "Malaysians get high".

So now I suggest that we start a campaign for sending our politicians into space as well. :ciao:

Just don't tell them that they'll have to find their own way back... :41:

do anyone remember when was the last time a person set their feet on the moon?

After Nasa have acheived this with Neil Amstrong, they have stopped. but that does not means that they are not trying again.

Can you remember when Yuri Gagarin step out into space?

We have to start from somewhere in order to progress. (but don't screw it up.)

Nasa didn't stop after apollo11----- - 12 , 13 (aborted) 14,15,16,17 .

hello that would be too expensive. Do you know how much it cost to train them for the flight.

Since they are not coming back, I guess some no frills basic training will do... :p

"Hey,waddaya know! murtabak ayam microwaved in space tastes jes d same!!"

From next year, the government is going to charge service tax for any type of service rendered to you, irregardless of the amount. Currently, if your turnover is RM150k, then, you have to charge the service tax to your customers.

Eg, for those of you who go for the PJ TT at HSBC, you know the Chinese guy who comes beating his chest asking for money? From next year, he's gonna charge you service tax for showing his silly face. That goes for the singer/guitarist in the same location who plays a couple of chords and sings (is that singing?).

Now, you know where part of our space exploration funding is going to be derived from.

Aiya who says we need to train them mah? Just load them into a big enough tin can and fire the bargers into space.... which no doubt the rakyat will enjoy doing.

i don't think this guys can make roticanai in space ... the roti canai will roll over him.... but who knows ..he may...

so then we can more space restaurants there on ISS ... selling roti canai, murtabak and mee mamak goreng ....

Definetly one of the things to distract the rakyat from the country's many woes after all we deserve it......muahaha

The govt already wasted a lot of the rakyats' money way before my grandmother met my grand dad. But nobody realised. The 1 tonne jack issue highlighted by xxx was one of the examples. The "nicely done" example. The space programme was not nicely done. Anyway, nice try. At the end of the day, they will still win with at least 2/3 rd majority under the "stability" banner. It is either magic or the Malaysian people are a bunch of idiots (because they love watching it happens, talk about it enthusiastically but they do nothing about it).

Its officially out. With Malaysia's boleh attitude; they are thinking of building their own space station. First they wanted to name the whole programme: Penerbangan International Space Station or P.I.S.S., but it didn't sound quite right. So, now they have named it Malaysian International Space Station or M.I.S.S..

wow! a whole range of diverse opinions.

my 2sen,...

Alex Yoong drove an F1 car for a whole season and 2 races in another season. He passed the tests and got his Super License and participated in the races so he IS an F1 driver. Not his fault the car sucked. Being a top level race driver involves more than talent, it requires sponsorship. The driver must have the backing of wealthy sponsors to even be invited to drive because after all F1 is an advertising business more than a racing business. It is all about money.

As for A1, give him a break,... Malaysia placed 5th out of 20 countries 2 years in a row which is a tremendous feat considering the more technically advanced nations we beat. He is also a nice guy and a good father. Let's have a little more compassion for a Malaysian that actually made it to the top class of racing.

As for the Angkasawan,... Malaysia was in the market for fighter jets and the Russian government sweetened the deal by offering the space flight as an 'incentive' to buy the Sukhoi SU-30 as it would not 'cost' them anything to send our Angkasawan into orbit, they had an empty seat. As I understand the deal, Malaysia paid for those fighters with palm oil, not money, so it was a barter trade,... a pretty good deal all in all.

The Americans would not provide access to the software code for their fighters meaning that they could control or shut down our planes at their desire, not a smart thing! Even the UK refused to by the US fighters because of this.

... and yes, our present govt stinks. Bring back Dr.M, at least he got things done!
