Huh?
.? I m going to collect my car tmr....hopefully not as noise as your comments

The idle sound is annoying with ticking/tapping sound like diesel. Loud on the outside but I did not notice it from inside the cabin. I am pretty sure I am going to get a lot of grief from my friends on this. Only saving grace is that the engine note when you open up the throttle is quite acceptable.

I don't know about F30, but to me all bmw engine sounds harsh.
But since u can hear the noise from inside I would say something isn't working properly.

Don't compare with the CBU 328 sound insulation la. Of course got difference.

It took me by surprise too when i was at ingress recently. I approached a red idling f30 which from the engine sound i was certain it was a diesel. Turned out to be a 328i instead.

On the M Track day... I saw a red F30 went on track. Passing by.. i thought this fellow is bring his 320d on track.. to my surprise... after looking at the badge... it's a 328i... the sounds is misleading.. perhaps similar technology to the diesel 320d... could be wrong though... :)

After driving my 328i for a week, I've accepted such short coming of the F30, you forgo 2 cylinders but get more power & torque which come in very early in the range and it gets really addictive after a while. Very different from the IL6 of the E90.

The world is full of comprises, this is just a small one!:top:

May I ask if this is just speculation or fact? Anyone with first hand experience care to chime on the noise level between the CBU and SKD versions.

Personally I can't tell the difference, may be is my age, ear getting less sensitive! LoL

Caught me by suprise when i pick up my car in ingress....first time start up...and i hear this this annoying sound...sounds like i m driving a taxi... Crap...

From what read.. It is the direct injection...higher pressure needed thus the sound, same with diesal where the engine use high pressure explosion to movethe cylinders....

But theyshould have put in more thought in insulation....

Was this experience like a test drive of the CBU and then on your SKD a month or so later? Without an A/B test one after another with a very short interval between both cars, then I think is up to speculation either way. I was led to believe the difference in materials if any, do not result in any change in quality unlike the CBU/CKDs of old. Jason

It's not the material but the quality at the point when the car was assembled. Hence it is widely known fact that CCBU cars have a better build quality than SKD /CKD cars. Otherwise some people won't be paying arms and legs to get CBUs, knowing well that a cheaper version is just a few months down the line. Unless the Kulim plant has grown by leaps and bounds with their F30 production quality, only time will tell.

Sticking to the topic, can u provide experience where the CBU / SKD had different noise levels? Else you are just speculating and encouraging what could be an outdated situation that may have already undergone improvements.

As I troll through the various international BMW forums, I come across just as many complains about cars coming out of Germany. So I do not quite subscribe to the idea that the German laborer is somehow a superman.

Jason

Jason, I have been to the plant albeit the Shah Alam one (you'll be shocked!) and recently had to address a number of assembly issues on my dad's F10 that came out of the Kulim plant. I can tell ya, assembly issues are still prevalent! I can only guess that in Germany, there's just better workflow, processes, efficiency and definitely duty of care. I won't comment whether this insulation issue is related to assembly, haven't collected my F30 yet and dunno enough to comment. My only advise is if you have assembly issues, nip it in the butt before collecting the car. In this instance, it helps if the dealer has a bodyshop, like Ingress. My F10 spent almost a week there before I took delivery. Same with my impending F30, I gonna check through with a fine tooth comb! Fact is, CBU assembly quality is near perfect, SKD is often no where near. Sad but true.

German BMW manufacturing plants use plenty of robotics. Kulim plant is highly manual labor in comparison. Labor is cheaper here vs the cost of re configuring the robots to assemble different make and models of cars at the Kulim plant.

However most of the parts are sourced from AG instead of getting MY suppliers to supply equivalent parts and bill of materials for an SKD car and CBU car here should be almost identical. So you should just get better precision, consistency and fit for a CBU vs SKD but insulation should be the same.

I have been to the shah Alam plant (before it was closed down), kulim lvp plant and the regensburg plant where the 3 series and x cars are made. The only difference is the amount of robotics used. In Kulim it's manual labour but a lot of the parts are already pre-assembled, and it's just mounting these parts on the SKD chassis. The parts are similar if not totally the same. All these cars go through the same stringent qc checks like in regensburg.

Cheers

Agree with E46Fanatic and ALBundy, and I will add that SKD cars have the same amount of robotic precision as CBU since all parts already come prefabricated in kit form from Germany, e.g. The body arrives at the plant fully welded and painted. What's left is the assembly process in Kulim which is the same as those in the German plant. Therefore I would wager that there is no difference between sound insulation of the CBU cars and SKD cars... Until someone proves this wrong.
