Hey my F30 sound like a diesel engine too, I tot the bloody BMW guy give me a right car with a wrong engine too, hehe. Thank god I am not the only one ....
but is this correct sound? I mean; it sound like that right?

Didn't you notice it when you went for a test drive?

The engine noise could be due to the fact that it's a turbo. I've driven a test drive car 328i which makes so much noise. Much more than a diesel. Expect that to come when your car starts to age.

All modern 4 cylinder engines produce the valve clatter noise. VW/ Audi engines have been doing this for ages.Unless we can find more oil from Mars or the canadian tar sands, or find ways to magically remove or bury all the fossil carbons that we have released from oil into the atmosphere, the days when we lust for the straight 6 cylinder sound is gone for most people.

I guess more people will be shocked or complain when they hear BMW is already coming out with a 3 cylinder 1.5 engine in the 1series ( read Autocar ). I bet this would sound a lot worst heh heh heh ;) . I can imagine in 5 years time, the next 328i would be poweredby a similar 1.6 engine...and to make that 6 cylinder sound, bmw will rollout the system that makes the synthetic sound from the speakers like what the M5 is doing now into all 3 series.

The upside? We can still have some "joy" and performance from rear wheel drive, 50/50 weight, 242hp, 6.1 secs to the century, all at our disposal while producing less than 150 of CO2 and returing apprx 7.7l/100km (6.3 theoretical is not yet achieved).
Sacrifices...

Next year's smallest AMG, the Merc A25, will also be using a 4-potter derived from Merc F1's 1.6 litre engine, is expected to produce more than 335bhp! And that's without the Black treatment.. ie in BMW talk, its only like an M-Performance car, not the ///M car.

With that coming in a few months' time.. so 300bhp, 5 sec century sprint and 6.0l/100km can very well be a reality for the next generation 328i.. I'll be more than happy to have that and live with some clatter and synthetic sound.. :4:

VW goft GTI and SCIROCCO also 2 litre Turbo, but how come no noise as compare to F30 ??

Tested both 328i and 320i but NOT on the same day ......
The 328i was of course more powerful but to my surprise, I think the 320i was a nicer drive..... sweeter engine note, feels smoother and acceleration with 3 adults is still very good.
In terms of engine noise on full throttle, the 320i seems to be more quiet than the 328i. Engine sounds more muted yet sporty. The 328i I thought was a little too loud for comfort. As the cars were tested on different days, I am not sure if my engine noise observation on WOT is true!
Anyone else tested both? .... kindly share your observations. THnx.

hi all

heard it myself how the f30 328 sounds like old taxi at idle n test drove it myself how it lacks the handling finesse (for a 3series) at high speed..

but when the 328 m sport comes out n being driven ( instead of idling), i salivate.. allis forgiven..

Agree bro, the 328 stock springs & non-staggered 225/45/18s produce a soft & bouncy ride if driven hard. But not havin so much grip is not necessarily a bad thing.. u can enjoy the perfect balance & the art of sliding at safer speeds.. :4:..

ur right _M_

as an everyday drive non msport 328 f30 makes perfect sense. unless the m sport version comes with active damping, might have to slow down considerably when taking speedbumps.. in the non msport 3er, just point n go anywhere anytime.

i oso like the fact the rear seats is so so much more spacious than e90, can carry family in comfort esp long distance.

n the 328's (sport trim) rim i must say, super cool looking...

4 cylinder engine noise or sound (which ever you prefer) will never be as good as the 6s previously. however, the power we get from the 328i is more than enough to make up for it.

i sold my 325i. 2.5 litre but 7.6s. today, the 328i will run circles around it.

yes, the 328i is not as good as the 325i around the corners. thats what i miss most about the 325i. not the fuel economy though.
