met a guy today distributing syntium oil. he said the base stock comes from exxon mobil and formulated in singapore for petronas. so, you're essentially getting mobil oil.

i am currently usng mobil1 5w40 synthetic from carrefour. pretty good.

Probably I'll just get the Shell Ultra 5w-40 from Carrefour this weekend as RM129 is a very good price.

Mont-o... Maybe there's something there about BMW not recommending 60 grade oil... too thick for the Vanos and other thingy in the engine perhaps? As a result idling won't be smooth.

Greets,

For my beloved 1988 e30 m20b25, I use only AC Delco 20W/40 now ever since I own the bimmer 1 year ago now.

Regards.

E30M20b25 is my ride.

Previously i'm using AMOIL 10W-40, PETRONAS Syntium 3000 0W/30.
Now I'm using Shell Helix Ultra 15W-50.

Almost the same & so far so good for all of this oil, but the shell seems having a good oil quality after the engine running for 10000KM. This is what i noticed after testing the oil quality by the oil sensor.

Old model engine
Thicker oil grade reduce the wear & teppet sound. It prevent oil consumption cause by the old piston ring, gasket too.
*fully synthetic oil are recommend if the old engine has been rebuild.

Late model engine
Thinner oil grade allow the smooth flowing in the hydralic teppets & mechanism such as vanos/camshaft adjuster. Smaller gap between components allow smooth flowing & better acceleration (engine feel lighter).

higher oil viscocity allow the engine oil stand up to higher temperture before it malfunction. so its much suitable for those high performance engine.

My 2cents...

this is also my experience on mobil1 15w50 synthetic oil. i have much improved fuel consumption something like 11+km liter after 10,000km. when i switched to using 10w40 oil, i have better consumption right from the beginning. this suggests the engine should use w40 oil for better efficiency.

if you take care of your engines, 10w40 is about the right viscosity on BMW engines. another cheap and good oil to use is RRR 10W40 fully synthetic. very good and cheap from UK. only $30 for 5 liters at Carrefour.

for those thinking w60 oil is better for protection, you will have to undo your traditional thinking. modern engines use better oil. new ones even use w30 or w20 oils. so w40 is about the right one, even if you redline frequently.

Dude... would not really agree with you here...... You see, every oil pack is made out of 80% Base Oil component and 20% additive component... While there are thousands of Lube Brands worldwide, there are only a number of Base Oil suppliers in the world and ExxonMobil has one of the biggest base oil capacities in the world... therefore you'll find many many prominent Lubricant brands buying base oil from ExxonMobil, however the effectiveness of the oil lies in the 20% additives oil, which is normally distinctive to each lubricant brand and this is where the difference lies... So, when you buy Petronas or Motul or other brands that utilizes Exxon's base Oil, you're not getting Mobil Oil - You're getting their formulation of Base Oil plus additives... Btw, the Petronas Lubes are formulated at their Lube Blending Plant in Melaka and not Singapore... ;) :)

yes, you're right every formulation is different due to additives and i am aware of that. and all oils are not created equal. anyway, it is important to have good base stock.

i am just saying loosely you're getting mobil oil (though not mobil1 :)). so syntium is not formulated in singapore!

No wonder I like Mobil 1 SuperSyn. :D

I am ver inclined to get the Shell Ultra 5w-40 for RM129 @ Carrefour tmrow and keep it for my next oil change. My only concern is whether it is too thin for my E36. Thanks

Ya,I do understand. Its too damn cheap a price to ignore. 35 - 40% price reduction ler.

I went to Carrefor Seberang Jaya today. There was boxes of this oil(Shell Ultra 5w-40 ), but I was a bit put off by the labelling...could find any explaination in English.

Anyway i decided not to get the oil yet and see what they do with the stock as it doesnt seem to be selling well despite the promo.

On my part I am still a bit sceptical as to the suitability of the oil for our climate.

As I mentioned above, my ride is running on Petronas Syntium 5000... I'm tuly satisfied with the performance of this oil and would recommend it to anyone, anyday! Previously I was using Mobil 1 (another very good oil) but after using Syntium, my acceleration felt lighter and my fuel consumption improved - under normal driving conditions... Try it - you'll know what I'm talking about... :) :)
