I think Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 is going for RM129 @ Carrefour until month end. What do u think?

Dunno about the content but the packaging looks different. Anyway, might not be suitable for your car since its more "thinner" and offers less protection(but better mileage) for your engine. Use 15W-50 like me but I must admit that Mobil 1 SuperSyn suits my E36 better. So gonna switch back to it at the next servicing. :)

Ok spare part shop quoted me RM135 Edge Sport 10w-60. Probably better than 5w-40 in view of our hot climate. What do u think?

For newer engines (milage below 100,000km), 5W/40 should be OK but for older ones perhaps thicker oil is recommended.
But, make sure you buy from reputable shops as there are a lot of imitations on Shell & Castrol

Ya, even ladies got imitation ones. Cabutz!! :D

i m using the edge sport. Not bad. :) It's feel smooth but all new engine oil feels smoooth. Give it a try and if you no like it, just pour it out and change a new one. :)

elwine 30 got a point. I believe all reputable engine oil are good and the most important is regular oil change;)

Well basically, if the choice is b/w Shell Ultra 5w-40 and Castrol Edge Sport 10w-60, which fully synthetic should I use for my E36 at my next oil change?

Thanks

Go for Castrol. Another option is Petronas Syntium 1000 (15w/50)

personnely, i would go for castrol. but to me, it's all the SAME. :p

Yes I use TOTAL-ELF 20W-50 Mineral oil for my M52B28.:)

I had compared Shell Helix Ultra 15W-50 and Castrol Magnatec 10W-40 before, at room temperature, the Castrol seemed to be thicker than the Shell... hmmm, this surely goes against the "50" and "40" viscosity rating... don't tell me the Shell's imitation...

Anyway, anxious, for Vanos engines, all the user manuals state viscosity up to 40 only for some reasons... I'm using Caltex Havoline (Chu Seng only carry this) fully synthetic 15W-50 though... the Castrol Edge Sport 10W-60 is good, but not sure how it will fare in your M50B25TU... anyone here have used a 60 grade before?

Hmmmm, interesting, that website is only linked to Castrol... maybe the "40" is the minimum viscosity rating specified by BMW for climatic conditions above a certain temperature (as in permanently warm areas of the world, like here), so, all multi-grade oils above SAE 40 grade can be used...

anxious, do not believe everything from the net bro. why not you do a poll on the forum to gauge which brand of oil they use.

In terms of type, w40 is the standard one. 50 and 60 is a little too thin but it's good for new cars.

elwine, I think the bigger the number, the thicker the oil is... for eg., Kancil uses 10W-30, putting in 15W-50 usually results in serious loss of power...

My car E36 328i all the time using MAG 1 fully syn oil....engine smooth, almost unnotice the sound when idling. Last week gatal tukar to castrol EDGE SPORT 10w-60 at Ah meng place, my engine sound rough and vibrate. Going to drop out the oil and change back to MAG 1 oil ASAP.

Don't get me wrong i am not saying that Castrol EDGE sport are not good and trying to promote the MAG1 oil. That just my experience on my car...i havent got the clue why. Any sifu can figure out why????

cheers
