bro so syiok getting the new ride sampai gambar pun post upside down arr :4:

Hows the beast bro? Looks awesome, really hard to beat CSL's on an E46!

For those who are interested, here is the SIB that I promised to upload

E46SIB_zpsd6577435.jpg

Thanks for the SIB.

As I mentioned earlier, it's the drive shaft head free play that causes the 'clunking sound'. Not the guibo or other stuff mentioned by others.

If its the guibo, worn bushes on the differential cover and long shaft mounting there will be a vibration when the car is accelerating. Just place your hand on the transmission tunnel and its evident.

Google has made many googling experts, but nothing can beat hands on ownership experience.

Cheers

No problem, worn diff mounts do cause clunking. First hand experience there. Ask Ah wai if you would like to know, he pressed in the new bushes because I don't have a hydraulic press. Yes, there is a certain differential bush that fits without having to buy the whole diff cover before I am questioned (those that own E46 M3's should know this). It vibrates while there is movement on the drivetrain but it is load changes that exhibit clunking. I am talking about the differential itself that clunks. BMW says this as well. It is a little strange you dismiss the differential even though you still have clunking after refurbishing the drive shaft head. I have not once said that it is not the driveshaft head. It could very well be, everyones car is different. I think we should all keep an open mind.

Information that I have is not only from Google if that was a direct jab at me. While I may not own an E46 M3, my brother does and I have worked on it with my own hands. I do 90% of the work on my own car as well so it's not all google knowledge. While I did bring up Googling this issue, the reason was so that the readers here will have a better understanding about the problem at hand that is stated in the SIB. Whether or not this is their issue depends on their car. The problem should not just be dismissed. That is my point here. There is plenty of good information on the internet if you know where to look. With that said, everyone that posts on those threads own the car themselves so I am not sure what you are trying to say there.

As I said previously, I would no longer post in this thread about this problem and to take it to another thread or PM's if there was more to be said. I posted that SIB for everyone's benefit. You can't get that except from a BMW dealer. BMW took their bulletin offline a while ago. I don't think you can find this document on the internet. That SIB document is a picture because it is a screenshot, technically it is not allowed to be shared.

Thanks for the discussion!

ssmann, I apologise for taking this thread off topic. Enjoy the beast!

1) Worn differential bushes DO NOT cause clunking, unless vibration is considered clunking to you.
When the differential cover bushes are shot, you will experienced vibration or a low hum grinding noise under acceleration. If you are cruising there is no vibration. This happened to mine, and after I replaced the bushes the vibration was gone. Again, first hand experience as a 3 1/2 year old owner. As I mentioned earlier, the only noise from the LSD is a grinding noise when it's cold. Most of the time, changing the LSD oil will eliminate that noise and BMW's LSD oil with friction modifier is a must. Again, clunking is due to the free play in the drive shaft head/joint as explained in the SIB due to load changes. Very simple, if one upshift and ease off the throttle, there won't be any clunking noise due to minimal load changes. You can try it if you have an E46M3.

Similarly for guibo and long shaft mounting.

I speak as a M3 owner and someone that has been modding BMWs for 13 years, from engine transplant to
Turbo charging a BMW. Google has make many googling experts but not many know what they are talking about. Talk to me if you own an e46 M3 and has driven the car daily (and on the track) for 3 1/2 years :) Otherwise, with all due respect, you are just relying on the experience of others (rightly and wrongly);)

Cheers

Boys, no worries. As long as the discussions are educational and enhance one's understanding of the cars and view points around it, hijack away!

A question, what are the suspension set ups folks are using on their cars? I enjoy the PSS10, but may want to move away from coilovers. Any suggestions? Tq

Some pics i took a moment ago after washing the babies......missing my 3rd baby. Will try a nice shoot tomorrow with all 3 and post in The Showroom. All my babies need a good detail, and hopefully if time and wallet permits, their wish will be answered before the new year! But I must say the 38 remains my favourite...the M3 comes a very close contender...hahaha
