negative rear wheel camber-standard?

Hallo sifus,I just noticed my e39 (1997) rear wheels have negative cambers. I did not notice it until yesterday. As I stand from the rear of the car, the negative camber is actually quite obvious. (Negative camber = the wheel bottom further out than the top, right?).Is this the standard set-up for beemers (at least e39s)?Come to think of it, it is probably one reason (of many) why Beemers handle as well as they do.Cheers

Rear negative camber is normal for BMW's. I think should be between 1 - 2 degrees. It is to keep oversteer to the minimum but not to the extend of excessive uneven tyre wear.

The newer BMWs also minimal negative front camber so that the car would understeer instead of oversteer.. It's easier to control understeer for most ppl. but it's not fun for the seasoned drivers.. Seasoned drivers like to counterlock..

Try changing it to zero or positive camber and at the first hard corner you will see why it is set to negative.

Care to share where do you send your car for alignment and balancing. I think the last time I send mine to Tmn Tun, the guy adjusted the cambers to be 0 and on top of it charged me extra for it. I'm looking for a good tyre shop around in Klang Valley - PJ area will be good.

In fact, I am surprised to hear workshops adjusting the camber to 0degrees (assuming the correct setting is negative camber!!!)!? Don't they have "standard" settings on their computer to indicate the correct angle?

I must add, my past experience with tyre shops in KL have mostly (if not all) been distressing . Not the same downhere in JB though... possibly experience have taught me to be more careful...

There is a 'standard', for standard equipment.

But the moment the equipment is non-standard, ie. modded, and the moment the driver wants something more suited to his style, then we are into customising territory already. Here, you need to experiment until you find a setting you like.

true its really superd in handling, but for my case, my E34 rear left wheel very obviously having negatif chamber, resulting very fast uneven wear, infact the left tyre wear faster than the right tyre. Is it any way to change the chamber? of course not to 0, but at least same with the right wheel?

If you want good grip during cornering, you need more negative camber.

So, if you enjoy cornering hard, you've got to live with uneven tire wear.

In my case, I go for a tyre like Yokohama Advan Neova AD07. It can be flipped left and right. So, when it wears too much on the outside, I just swap left with right tyres, and it feels like a new set. It's like getting 50% discount for tyres.

Not sure abt 18".

For 17", the last i checked in Jan, it was approx RM600-700 each.

Does E39 comes with adjustable rear suspension? Not many cars have rear adjustable suspension as standard.

Hope this will help, but not sure if the specs applicable to E39...
