dear all, need your advice on the subject above. Thank in advance.

size is not suitable, rolling diameter is too small for a 5er. that is the correct size for 3 series only.
235/40R18 is the correct size.

I dont see any issue using 225/40/18, just make sure you have the correct rim width. The rim width should be between 7.5" to 9". Bear in mind the tyre size you opted is going to affect the speedo reading.Try to replace the tyre/rims with the radius not more than 3%.
Another point you might want to take into consideration that it will not good with e39, the section width of the tyres are too small and it will sit in deep into your wheel arch.

Out of curiousity - why that tyre size ?

No, don't go for 225 if your rim width is 9".

No not suitable. I have used them before on my 18" rims. Ride will be bumpy, Tire wear faster and you will have lesser absorption when you hit the bumps which will cause your lower and upper are to kaput faster.

My experience using the 225 40 18

Mine is 235/40/18. Feels absolutely perfect for my 530i. I think you should go for this.

Bro what about the rears since they're staggered what size you're using for the rears? Your rims are 8JJ FR and 9JJ rear right?

Bro,

Depend on your rims width. I was told for 225 tires minimum is on 8.0" wheel width.

It's not the rims. Its the weight of the car. My rims are 8.0 all round

e39 comes with stock rims of 225/55/16. The diameter of the wheel for this settings is 25.7 inches

225/40/18 - this will give a diameter of 25.1 inches. This will indicate an overread on the speedo by 2.6%. (not ideal). Rim width for this setting is between 7.5 - 9 JJ. Optimum would be 8jj

235/40/18 - diameter is 25.4 inches. Overread by 1.3% (close enough). Rim width between 8 - 9.5 JJ. Optimum 8.5jj

245/40/18 - diameter 25.7 inches. Overread by 0.1% (optimum, which is also the correct setting). Rim width between 8 - 9.5JJ.Optimum 8.5jj

And if you have staggered setup...the rear should be 275/35/18. overread 0.6%. Rim width 9 -11JJ. Opt 9.5.
although 265/35/18 is also acceptable. overread by 1.7%.

cheers...

Good info bro.

however It did not work for me cause the car felt like a steamroller.

dear all,

Thanks for all the input and comment. I got the tyre together with the rim.
But during installation, the mechanic recommended that 225 40 18 'look' small and recommended me 235 40 18 for front and 245 45 18 for back. LOOK GREAT but... feel the drag at high speed (140-160km/hr)..... but now the LOOK GREAT is coming to an end since the 245 45 18 worn out only within 3 months of usage...appearantly is a 'Sport' version and very very soft. ... of course after long long journey to KL-Ipoh-Alor Setar-KL,KL- KB-Kuantan-KL and KL-JB-Melaka-KL.

Anyway, pocket is drying out and the thought of using back the 225 40 18 on front and transfer the 235 40 18 to back.

Am travelling againt next week to Ipoh-Penang-Alor Setar. Hope the 225 40 18 able to cop my journey... till next month..anybody have any 235 40 18 to sell?. cheers

How come the mechanic recommended u the rear tyre profile (45) higher than the front (40)? What is the reason being? Normally, the rear tyre profile lower than the front, right? Anyone?

Besides, u may consider Nexen tyre. Check the catalog that the tyre seems not bad at all.

Hi bro, i understand the pain on constraint budget when it comes to tyres. Having said that i suggest you get a proper set if not new. Bear in mind, the 4 tyres are the only thing that stick your car to the road. Therefore its best to ensure proper tyres for safety. I saw a set of F1 245 40 18 selling at good price in the forum, you might want to check it out if its not already sold.

Cheers !

WGT523,
I will definitely not agree with what you are about to do. It is very unsafe, as mention earlier by champion, its the only 4 things that keeps us in contact with the road. However, the decision is you.

Looking at your post, you seem to travel quite a bit. For me, I dont rate a tyre thread wear by how long I've own it, but rather the mileage it has covered. If for instance, in 3 months, you have managed to clock 30000-35000kms, I think it is quite reasonable, considering it being an 18 inch.

I'm on falken FK452, 245/40/18 n 265/35/18, its 13 months since i bought it, clocked bout 30000kms n have about 50% remaining.I wouldnt say its the longest lasting tyre, but considering the way i drive n the mileage it has covered, its pretty reasnable.(its also a "sports tyre")

If tyre wear and comfort are your concerns, the next option would be 17 inch.( since you travel quite extensively, but the LOOK GOOD factor is gone).

just my 2 cents...
cheers brader...
