5A and 5B is the O2 sensor. You need to change this cos it is use for control.
5D is the O2 after the cat. Optional to change cos use for monitoring only.

O2 sensor before cat cost 350 and 380 each. The price is the cable length.

I think I know why your reading is 15(off) and 20(on). i think it due to your rpm is set at 700 to 750.

btw, when your engine warm up, what is the idling speed, MAF flow A/C on/off ?

Jarance,
Those codes seem common when scanned with BMW Scanner, they are in shadow memories. Mine have that too last time, I clear with GT1 and they never came back. Anyhow, I have changed on O2 sensors (pre-cat) and now monitoring the consumption, FC looks better, need more time to confirm that.
I have 2 used O2 sensors , perhaps a little sluggish but no codes.

Jarance, have you tried using your GT1 to measure the voltage of the O2 sensors and MAF. They should flunctuate from about .2 to .8 V very very quickly, the faster the better and the frequency should be well less than a second. Also check your additive and multiplicative adaptation to see if the car is running lean or rich.

btw, where did you change it? thinking of DIY but need to have the special tool to remove sensor.

still trying to get my GT1 to work lah.. Unix too slow so did not spend too much time to get it to work properly.

Just went to my Mech and got his boy to change it for me. I could have done it myself using their tools but no time la (needed to wait for the engine (exhaust) to cool down.

It is very slow, what I did was I got hold of a old XP laptop with 1 GB of RAM and did a total re-install from Win XP up. And it is running reasonable now compared to another setup I have got. Clean install will help and also a contiguos chuck of 19GB for the VM will help too. This laptop is now a dedicated toy, hehe.

If anyone would like to try out my old O2 sensors, let me know. Good for those who have codes but wanting to sell their cars soon.

It have been bought to my attention that there are some issue with the scanner for older models.

Some of the issue are:-
1. Can detect only DME/EGS but cannot detect other module.
2. Cannot detect DME but can detect other module.
3. Can detect other module but cannot detect DME/EGS.

This issue is related to car that have both 16pins-OBD port (under dashboard) and
20 pins-OBD port (inside engine bay)

see below:-
Under dashboard - 16 pin connectors.
Dconnector.jpg

Inside engine compartment - 20 pins connector (borrow from xcrave)
RoundconnectorE46.jpg

xcrave have mentioned that he can view all modules by using a 20pins adaptor and scan
it with the bmw scanner at the 20 pins diagnostic port. However, he cannot detect the
DME if he use the 16 pins diagnostic port.

Looking at the adaptor wiring configuration, it seem that pin 17 and 20 are shorted.
see below.
AdaptorwiringPINOUT.jpg

I have extract the wiring for the OBD from an E36 wiring manual for verification.
It seem that the communication to all modules can be done by linking the K-bus
of all modules. I have highlighted in red the signal from the scanner to the DME/EGS.
I also highlighted in yellow the K-Bus to other modules. If yellow K-bus and red K-bus
is link at 17 and 20, then communication is possible to all modules.

Its a pain to setup GT1 in Win7 64 bit i can run INPA with no problem... but GT1 are just too hard to configure... Laststep for me is to let the GT1 to accept data from com cable...

Was thinking to find old laptops with win xp too... hurmmm... that will be another project i guess...

How about the Live Data do u manage to read ?

i think there is a minor mod i did to wake the system better from my 20 pin cable... (i got the info from my OBD II Seller)

As i previous mentioned #16 (in pin 20) to pin #1 ( in 16 pin) jumper need to be done...

I use a wire from outside connect to pin #1 of my INPA/EDIABAS Since Jarance Adapater do not have Pin #16 connection...

alex, you need to sort out why your DME is not detected by the scanner first.

The DME and EGS module are in the engine compartment.

Yes i can... since the im using more INPA nowadays... GT1 Is tricky yet... BMW Scanner for quick change of simple errors....

I found out that my airbag warning is due to Seat Belt Tensioner driver side is faulty not the MAT (thank God) this is from the Live data bro, it shows activity of the seat belts, occupancy and such from the designated Module...

Im not guessing... this is confirmation since our car is actually identical... He cannot access any DME if he using under the dash connector... i just found out the Under Dash 16 pin is for Instrument cluster ONLY... i think the car was done so that you can actually do checks in the Interior from the Under Dash connector... and external checks can be acces from the Engine bay...

Alex need to restore his 20 pin first if he want to proceed... without the 20 pin even AB cannot do jack...

Errr... I said I can from BMW-S 1.4... but i use INPA more for Live Data since its more detailed...

But as i meantioned before he needs the 20 pin restored regardless...

After gone through my old scan result there was the DME of my car But i don't know why the recent don't hv:

Jarance,

After warm up, my car idling even at 700rpm is rather vibration free. It feel normal to me. Anyway, I had just changed new engine mounting and may be it does help a bit to filter out the minute vibration.

I just got hold of a simply DIY service/repair manual for E46. If you need, I can lend it to you anytime. I only use it for reference only as not really a DIY person.
