The most powerful M3 - with 4 doors - ever offered in BMW showrooms is here in Malaysia with a retail price of RM713,800 (excluding insurance). Sharing the 4th generation M3 Coupe’s high-revving and generation defining 4.0-litre V8 engine (15 kgs lighter) which is capable of delivering a maximum output of 309 kW/420 bhp at 8300 rpm (400 Nm of torque at 3900 rpm), the new sedan can rocket to 100 km/h from standstill in a claimed 4.8 seconds. For safety reasons, an electronic limiter restricts the maximum speed to 250 km/h. The V8 boasts the company’s variable double-VANOS camshaft management. Offering extremely fast and responsive valve timing, this technology reduces charge cycle losses and improves the output, torque and response of the engine, with a positive influence on fuel economy and emission management.
In line with the principle of BMW EfficientDynamics, the new BMW M3 also features Brake Energy Regeneration which ensures the generation of electric on the overrun phases and the application of the brakes. This serves to charge the car’s battery without tapping on engine power and, accordingly on the energy contained in the fuel burnt. Apart from extremely efficient generation of electric current, this also helps to provide more drive power when accelerating, making the car even more dynamic and agile on the road.
With this new 4-door variant joining the M3 stable, BMW’s raciest 3-series has become more practical and usable for everyday driving – while retaining the DNA of the current Formula 1 engine raced by the BMW-Sauber F1 Team. Adapted from BMW M’s racing heritage, a separate throttle butterfly for each cylinder – eight in this instance – provides immediate reaction to the gas pedal at all times. Two stepper motors operate the four throttle butterflies on each row of cylinders, giving the engine a particularly sensitive response at low speeds for extra power and performance.
The new M3 Sedan also sports the world’s first 7-speed Double-Clutch Transmission (M DCT Drivelogic), specifically conceived and designed for a high-speed power unit. Compared with all conventional systems available so far, this new gearbox ensures an optimum gearshift and even more dynamic acceleration, and, at the same time, reduces fuel consumption by a significant margin. The new M Double-Clutch Transmission with Drivelogic shifts gears without the slightest interruption in the flow of power, thus promoting both the sports driving experience and gearshift comfort for the driver. In its gearshift characteristics, the new M Double-Clutch Transmission with Drivelogic is ideally matched to the fast-revving V8 engine.
By switching between M DCT Drivelogic programs, drivers can vary shift times from a choice of 6 settings: 1 for maximum comfort, and 6 for maximum performance. The choice of programs determines the speed which one clutch engages and the other disengages, without any interruption of the flow in torque to the wheels.
Providing sure-footed responsive handling for a high-performance and luxurious sedan, a new aluminium chassis is developed specifically for this new model. Virtually all of the front-end components are aluminium, including the front struts, swivel bearings, central subframe and an additional thrust panel below the engine serving to maximize lateral stiffness of the entire front section. These weight-reduction measures and materials have helped reduce weight by approximately 2.5 kgs when compared to the previous M3.
Front to back, the design of the M3 Sedan evokes an athletic and sporting stance. The front end, though clearly a BMW based on the double-kidney shaped grille, boasts three large air intakes below the grille. The muscular look from behind is designed to take up the particular look of the car’s front end. A discreet lip spoiler on the bootlid optimises the car’s streamlining and reduces lift on the rear axle. In its contours, the split diffuser beneath the rear bumper takes up the shape of the air intakes at the front of the car as the air guide and the dual tailpipes move towards the centreline of the car, visually contracting the rear end at the lower centre point.
Inside, the M3 Sedan maintains the ambience of sporty functionality with electrically-adjustable M seats, a multifunction M leather steering wheel with the M Drive button and Carbon Stucture Leather interior trims, and “Novillo” leather seats in special colours. Also standard is BMW Individual headliner in Anthracite.
The M Double Clutch Transmission provides uninterrupted transmission of power for fast gear changes and driving dynamics programs such as Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Electronic Damper Control (EDC), Servotronic and the Power button providing fine tuned driving characteristics. With MDrive, all defined settings for DSC, EDC, engine response (Power button) and Servotronic can be stored and activated in a specially created personal program.
For wheels, the M3 Sedan rides on exclusive M light alloy wheels Double-spoke style 260 M with the tyres (front: 245/40 R18, rear: 265/40 R18) rated for the maximum speed.
