I declare that the Camry is a good car and the current version is quite handsome. I am sorry if I gave you the impression that I hate Japs. Well I do harbor some hatred for them for beheading my Grandfather and Grandmother. (That is the god honest thruth) But I love many Japanese cars.

On the camry, I recalled a conversation with a renowned gentleman (old) racer and motoring personality about car choices. His take is as follows:

Cars carries an image that reflects the driver. A Merc gives the impression that the driver's made it and most probably a rich towkay.

A Camry man is a well a camry man - mid 30's to 40's. Fairly successful career man. Frugal. Mortgaged house in the suburbs. Working wife. 2.5 kids. Waist went up 1 or 2 sizes. Next car will most likely be another Camry. Chants "Lexus, bah, I got the same for a third of the price".

A BMW is a young upcoming professional or self made businessman. Impatient to the point of being irreverent. Drives too fast for his own good at the wrong places/times. Sometimes anak or mistress to an orang kaya.

BTW, I just sold off my 4 year old Honda Accord 2.4 and had my fair share of BMWs (Bas Mini Wilayah) and public transport. I had to wake up at 5am everyday to take the 6am bus from Ampang Jaya to what was the AIA building in Malacca Street and then walked 2 miles to Klang Bus Stand to catch a Sri Jaya bus to Subang. The busses and trains are fun.

I can't imagine the day when every Malaysian has a car. It will be a huge car park with not enough roads to drive.

Affordability is actually by choice. Life is one huge compromise. You give up in some areas in order to get more in others.

And I think more than half of the Klang Valley population can afford a watch cos it is so cheap these days. I dont think Malaysians are that impoverished.

If not because of Chris Bangle, I'd love to do it. And because of him also, the older models look nicer and nicer. I am in the process of restoring an E28 for my cousin. I'd probably buy the older ones, make it look good and give it to other people.

I was most vocal in my objection of Bangle and his Bungle - E60. But I love the brand, the engineering and the drive.

Chris Bangle resigned already.. I thought that most die hard BMW fans should know about this??? Apparently, he quit the auto industry altogether and focus on his design house instead... rumour has it that it was because of dispute of BMW Insetta design that didnt go well..

Yes, he's no longer around. But the new 5 series F10 will be around for at least another 10 years! He wants me to totally give up on new BMWs or what? Instead of looking forward, I can't help but have to look backwards.

I think we do know that he's gone but his design will live with us like a stigma. His E60 was the one that made me paused buying new BMWs. I bought the E46 instead.

I thot he resigned because his ideas were passed over for the ideas of his protege by the new CEO over the Project i.

But frankly, give me a E9, E24 or 2002, anyday.

for me, you either love him or downright hate him... we gotta admit that he brought a lot of radical (some ppl even said controversial) ideas & changes on the future BMW designs. I think that controversial is sometimes good.... but that's only me!
Maybe we have to embrace the future while cherish the past designs... hopefully the new chief of design, van Hooydonk, will bring us more surprise.

No worries, for my daily drive. It will be the new ones. But for my indulgence, it's gotta be the relics.

Chris Bangle is not controversial. The new Perak MB is. Chris Bangle has crossed the line. With the new F10, he is now confrontational. If only the fuhrer is still alive.
