But my question is what about the gearbox? They are likely to be autos..... Will it take all that hp/torque? Any consequential mods required?
Of course the next best thing to do is to upgrade to manual gearbox.... :nyehehe: :nyehehe:

Nice pics of the HIOP stroker kits. Thats a serious piece of kit with a serious price, no doubt. I would think, it would be cheaper to go the S50 3.0 Euro M engine (second hand) rather than to stroke the M50 or M52 to such lengths. For M20 engines I can understand stroking to 2.9 litre or 3.1 litres.

The S50 '95 model can pump out almost 300 hp at crank with just a "sport" cam. Its single vanos and tough-as-nails engine. And of course, its a real M engine, no question about it.
Don't forget you are going for a used engine. There are many cost involve like parts and overhaul. To convert is not an easy job... right Alvin...
And M3 parts are much costly than the normal 3'er.
Stroker kit expensive because everything is new.

But the power gains for the stroker kit are calculated with the Hiop headers, end box, cams and remap. My guess is all the parts will cost an additional 20k plus.

Just doing the rebore won't get you the gains.

Cheers.

Well i did just that. Plonk in the S50B30 & its sweet. Love to rev it especially in 3rd gear. When each individual throttle opens that is like music. Not just the exhaust sound but the sound of the S50 mechanically moving in harmony!

Of course to do such mod, you should also mod
1. Brakes
2. Suspension

M engines will defiantely cost more in terms of parts but hey! who said torque is cheap!

"But seriously, Mr. E34EuroTouring (thats a mouthfull) has a point........ a standard or lightly modded S50B30 would already be very nice indeed. Likely in 300hp range and the party hasnt even started yet laugh.gif"

Yeah, thats still NA, SuperCharged to 360Hp easy!. TurboCharged to 400Hp just 9 psi intercooled. But then, it becomes a very dangerous car as one needs traction control to keep all that power in check. Racelogic sells a nice TC that the Aston Martin uses. For about 1100 quid.

My touring happens to have the S50B30US tranny which is S5D 310Z. Only problem is the diff is 4.10 gearing. A 3.73 LSD would be perfect!.
I am not so keep on a super-duper sleeper touring, so my 192HP is good enough!.

My sedan can do with the S50B30 transplant.

Yeah, S50B30 is the way to go hehe. IF I had a chance to do it all over again...would have chosen that path!!! :D

Since a fair few really likes the S50B30 engine. There might be a case to "corner" the asian market for this engine!. Here is the plan:

1) Get a whole lot of used engines from Germany. About 20 of them. Re-cond them in Subic FreePort. All seals changed and bench-tested by German mechanic (I know 1 or 2 who can/want to do it).

2) Re-Export it at Asean tariff rates with full papers.

I think it is possible to get it with manual tranny around RM 35-40K. Any takers ?.
:nyehehe:

I heard there is a half cut lying around for less than RM20k! :nyehehe:

Right TJ! :D

traction control is for wuss. Go drive the Kookaburra, in the wet, on gravel, with botak tyres, call 1-800-zoggee-wuss-shaker for L driving course.

Dude.... I have read about an E34 (ex-525i) with a US S50B30 transplant done by Korman.... the rationale for going with the smaller M engine rather than the obvious M5 engine was the lighter weight of the US S50B30.

Although an S50/52 going into the E30 chassis has been done before/talked about in boleh-land, I'm just wondering why no one has done an S50/52 into an E34 chassis :dunno:

I'm no expert but an S50/52 into an E34 would be about same money as a 3.2 stroker and about same amount of power too (dont go for US S50 lah go for euro S50 and get 286bhp(?)....)

am I just talking out of my ass here?

Anyone care to comment?

Hi Jipster,

You are on the mark about the cost issue difference. As Calvin says, stroker gives you basically a new engine while a used S50B30 euro is pretty much unknown history, so taking some chances here.

If one can get a reasonably good S50B30 engine (from Germany or UK), then could be worth the while provided conversion is done properly as some who has done it here can attest.

E34s with S50/S52 conversions are done by several owners in the US. Plenty more in germany, UK Sweden etc. In these places the labour cost are the killer money to be spent, unless an enthusiast does it himself over a summer.

Its a shame the S52 does not make it to the E39. Thats was the "old" BMW that positions their products the way they see fit. Look at Audi today, choose your engine type, whole range to pick from.

Me: I will skip E39, stick to E34 until E60 becomes afforable. For some reason E39 does not have the same feel as E34, even E60 525, does not feel that good. But E60 530i or 530D I am very impressed with. Thats the one!.

:eek:k:
