In the old forum I remember coming across someone who had a unused LSD for E34 lying around. If that person is still in the forum, you still have that LSD up for grabs?. I'm thinking of changing my stock rear differential (I believe its 3.73 ratio) to something higher for better acceleration. Perhaps to 4.10 ratio or higher. Has anyone done this and is there a marked improvement on performance?. BTW how much should a 2nd hand rear diff typically cost these days?. Is it worth it to change the rear diff for that extra oomph. Any comments welcome.

ehoe, your E34 is what year? My 1995 has the 4.10 open rear diff. Been considering changing to 3.73 to improve fuel economy. Performance the 4.10 is great when mated to my Jatco 5 speed but I think 3.73 will won't affect the acceleration too greatly as the Jatco is good for pulling power.

If you are free, we can see if a swap is possible.

And it also depends on the type of rear subframes, 520i and 525i are different, as such you may need to swap the diff covers (if possible). 4.10 ratio is good for 4 speed auto, but for a 5 speed auto box, 3.64 is more than sufficient.

Hi OSFlanker, my E34 is 1990 and its a 5sp. Tks for the offer for the swap but I have yet to confirm if I wanna change the rear diff. need to take into consideration fuel consumption and tire wear too for me, just toying around with the idea. I will however keep in touch with you if I do decide to do the swap ok. As it is my FC can be rather high esp on those days when my right foot feels really really heavy. :(

Just out of curiosity, what is your rpm when u r crusing at 100km/h with yr current ratios?. I think mine is hovering around 2700rpm give or take coz I'm running on 17'' so the speedo reading may be off slightly.

    E34 1995 525i, 4.10 rear diff, 5 speed Jatco auto

    100kph - 2,300 rpm
    120kph - 2,800 rpm
150kph - 3,500rpm (may not be accurate, too much traffic to maintain a constant speed)
