Agreed, bi-xenon specifically means low and high beam HID. The means are already well covered on this thread.
The E90 has a bi-xenon set up. And as explained, high-beam HID/xenons are 'activated' by moving a shroud or an aperture for full light output. Its the same projector/source.
The E90 also has a halogen high-beam source (the inner 2 lights). These are for passing lights (single pull back of the stalk) and also as DRLs. The reason being that the halogens are more responsive to activate in situations when you're flashing some idiot down
For greater illumination (like in dark streets), you'd push the light stalk forward to activate the HID/xenons High-beam (after which, said idiot will be instantly blinded)

'Angel eyes' or corona rings (proper term) are just incorporated styling elements. In the new E92 (and E93), they act as DRLs (rather cool ones at that). They were first introduced in the 2001 E39. They are Hella's Celis technology/innovation.
