Dear all,I ve a situation here on which workshop to trust after they done their diagnose (using computer) and later each of the 3 workshop that I went told me differently.Workshop 1 (in Subang jaya) said problem ona) Cam shaft sensorb) Throttle bodyc) valve moto tronicAll of the above will cost RM3K +. This guy is so fond of change, without giving other options....Workshop 2 (in subang jaya also-different shop)a) Only cam shaftThis is even much cheaper.Workshop 3 (In Pandan) computer shows a) Cam shaft sensorb) Oxygen sensorHe revealed that the timing must be check first and if the timing can be set back, the sensor might not need to be changes (after checking thru computer)FI, the 3 workshops mentioned are reliable workshop as most it has been said in the forum. So, tell me guys....whom to trust. My prob is that my E46 318i lost its power and as a result it consume petrol more than it shld. Even my wife can feel that the power is not there. Thanks

trust you very ownselve larrr brother and depends on how thick is your wallet and how would you want to build your relationship with the 3 work shop as of course this is not the 1st time you would be dealing with them ...

Similar to what Im facing...
but, im gonna go with the wshop which convince me more..
in other words, "Instinct"...

If you are not in a rush, then why not just change 1 thing at a time? Based on all 3 workshops' analysis, the cam shaft sensor seems to be a problem they all agree on. So change that first and see what different it makes.

The problem is once open the top, its advisable to replace the not so expensive items at one go rather than preparing to return and open the top for the second time because the gasket once open, need to replace liao, not sure if its the same here. If magnesium bolts needs to be open in the later generation engine, worst still because these bolts are as light as plastic but fit to use once only, once open, can throw.

What about reset the error codes and see if the same error code recur. Valvetronic motor very expensive, which can cause lose of power in all case of failure. Few E90 in the forum already had their's replaced.

Throttle body try cleaning first. Cheap fix if it works la.

Boy-o-boy, this is like multiple choice exam. If the option appear in all choices, that option sure correct, no need to think.. :3:

Finallly my instinct is to try out with a workshop in Pandan Mewah and it really paid off. Both the sensor are actually fine and it is becoz of the timing was out hat resulted the sensor shows faulty in the computer. That only cost RM250 and power has been restored. Saved $$$$$

Sensors are electronics item, they either works properly or will totally die especially those pulse generator (cam, crank sensors). Both cam and crank position sensors when faulty will cause the engine unable to start at all (happened to my N42 crank sensor, the power to fuel pump was cut off)
