I'm new to DSLR and got a D90 few months back, love it everytime. Even the ones sold in US are made in Thailand, but hey....that's a very good camera for the price. D40x is not bad too but the HD movie function on the D90 is the real bait (not that I use it so much), but the quality is pretty decent. Used it a lot with the 55-200mm VR ED lens.

Only problem was it failed to read the SD (generic 16GB) 2 times (POWER OFF and ON fixed the problem), but didn't notice the error again after switching to 8GB Sandisk Extreme III SD....must be the card I guess.

Is true true bro? I still have my 28-105D F3.5-4.5 with macro capability. I bought brand new for RM1200.

How's your D700? I read from the review there's a tendency to overexpose in JPEG. Is that true?

It's very easy to sell the 28-105mm, given that Nikon still hasn't updated its range of lens for the FX cameras, other than a couple of wide and mid-zoom lens, namely the 14-24mm and 24-70mm. For travelling the 28-105mm is great (other option is 24-120mm which is not that much better), especially when it's set to f/6.3 and above and macro function is very usable!

As for the D700, loving it. I normally shoot in RAW, so I have not experienced any problems so far. The only thing I noticed is pictures from the newer FX sensor will have a slight warmer tone to it. Some like it, some dislike it. That being said, just use CaptureNX or PS to remove the color cast to your preference.

What I like most in the D700 is the whole complete package which at the moment I think it's difficult to match by its competitors. Brilliant ISO performance, high FPS with battery grip (8fps), built in flash (important for a strobist like me!!) and great 51 point 3D tracking (for sports). As someone told me recently (he himself just acquired a D700 as well), there is NO LIFE after D700.:top:

Cheers:love:

There is always D700x or D800.......

It's not how long your lens is, or how big your camera is, it's how you use it that matters! Hmm.. it applies to other things as well.

I just got myself a D90 and I am still learning to use it. Will be experimenting with it next week. I just hope it works well in sub-zero temperatures. Am mostly worried about condensation and battery life in very low temperatures.

Jeffphan - what brand SD card did you use that gave you problems? I am currently using Kingston 16GB SDHC (Class 4) for most shots, since it's cheap (RM110-120 each) and I have 4 of them (also shared with my Pentax point & shoot, and my laptop). For situations where I anticipate taking many shots in rapid succession, I'll be using the SanDisk 16GB Extreme III 30MB/s Edition (have 1).

That's the thing bro. That's why I am a bit reluctant to upgrade. D3X is already in the market.

Unless you do big commercial print, D3X would be overkill for normal use. Unless you have money to spare and want bragging rights.

Guys.. guess many are carried away hahahaha!! I believe our tread starter is asking D90 or 450D.. LOL!! My vote goes to D90 but if new owner then I prefer they start with Sony A350 with good prime lense. Features are at par with D90 but price is about RM1500 less. You can use that extra money for good prime lense

Unlike film cameras, when it comes to digital cameras the more expensive the camera, the better the result. The result on the D3, as it is, is a lot better than the entry level Nikons. They are still searching for the holy grail "film like" results and the D3 almost got it.

AGREE AGREE! But I am now eyeing the Fujufilm finepix S100FS. The S5 pro is quite similar to my D200. The Fujifilm S100fs has special features such as film simulation bracketing (I miss shooting velvia transperancies), dynamic range bracketing and AE bracketing. This fujifilm S100FS is more compact than a normal SLR, but it feels like holding a proper camera. I guess this is more suited to my lifestyle as a traveler. Another camera that is on my list is the Leica D-lux 4. Its cousin, panasonic lumix LX-3 scored very high marks.

Reaper,

Let's get things straight. Whichever camera you plan to buy, bear in mind that you are not actually buying a camera. You are buying a system (lenses, flash and accessories). Once you stuck, you basically stuck forever. So, please think carefully. I prefer Nikon because of its special lens coating. In terms of mechanical stuff, Canon beats Nikon hands down. They are the leader in IS, SWM and what not. Their lenses can already focus very fast coupled with the latest image stabilizer technology when Nikon was still struggling to make a non-rotating barrel. That's why if you notice sports photographers prefer to use Canon. On the other hand, Nikon is a bit lagging when it comes to this stuff. That is not a major concern to me since I normally shoot landscapes and people. If you ask me, why Nikon? It is the lens. Canon makes everything from photocopier to printers. Nikon - strictly lenses (eyeglasses included).

Don't think 'which camera?', think 'which system?'.
