What’s the car battery lifespan?

wow. 5 years thats good. How long it can last without starting it ? i never start my car for 15 days, and start all ok after 15 days..just curious ??

From past experience, batteries in the e39 did last up to 4yrs plus almost to 5yrs.

I think the durability of the battery will also depend if its located in the engine compartment, under the seat or at the back in the boot. Earlier UDM had their battery in the engine bay and with all that heat generated from the engine, battery life span is shorten by quite a bit. Typically batteries located in the engine compartment will last maybe 1.5 - 2 yrs esp if you are doing a lot of stand still driving (i.e traffic jams) when the engine bay is the hottest. In my opinion, if your batt is in your engine bay just get one of those normal batt will do, no need to spend so much on those exp maintenance free batts.

Batteries located under the seat or at the boot will last at least double the life span of those located in the engine bay so typically 4 - 5 years provided they are kept up to a good charge by long drives, etc. Go for a good quality maintenance free batt for this locations and you should have trouble free operation for quite a number of years.

The maintennace free battery on my E39 is more than 4 years old it has never skipped a beat. If I remember correctly, on my E36 I changed the maint free at 3 years because the sides started to swell. On my GTi, 3 batteries in 3 years cos the car is hardly ever driven. Outside of the GTi, average for regular batteries on all my other cars is 3 years. I think the maint free last longer but are more expensive.

And if you do need to get a replacement, where would be good? Assuming going for the same specs with maintenance-free.

I'm still on the original battery after 4 1/2 years. My alternator died a year ago, and AB sg besi "recharged" the battery (donno what that means).
Odometer is 59+k kms now, and the car has a history of not being driven for 3-4 days in a stretch when I am traveling.. So the BMW battery is good stuff!

just changed mine at 5+ years, no problems actually, just didn't want to look for someone to jump start when it fails.

cost me 240/=, same specs maintenance free thingy.....

You might find this unbelievable but when i was still studying in Australia which was about 2 - 3 months ago, at the end of every year i would be back in KL for around 3.5 months and my BMW never failed to start when i got back there.

I thought most batteries died if you didnt disconnect it after a month or so but every time, 3.5 months and it still starts up wonderfully..

Mine lasted 4.5 years. My car is used almost daily and almost every night (which means lights on).

BMW batteries which are stored in the car boot last a whole lot longer than those in the engine bay. Hence a lot of us are seeing 4+ years lifespans or more. Its nice and cool in there compared to the engine bay.

My Jazz maint free battery died after a short 1.5 years only. No heat shield around the battery but good thing is that it died before the 2 year warranty/maint free package from Honda lapse. No hassle, swapped FOC...

E46 maintenance free batteries "recomended" life span is 4 years. Mine was fine and it worked just like new even being 4.7 years old and considering that when I travel, my ride is idle and sometimes being away for 14 days in a stretch.

I just changed mine last week for precautionary reasons as I also heard that when they die, they die without warning or symtoms!

So, becareful not to stretch your ringgit too far!
