valvetronic motor problems on e90

I just spent over 1k replacing the valvetronic motor. Painful but I wouldn't bet on these quick fixes. Atleast now I know that my motor is a brand new one. also they changed the gasket around my engine to prevent oil leaks. Might be preventive repairs but give the car a new lease of life.

My car was diagnosed with valve seal issues. The repair kit is valve seal ring. The symptom of this issues is the excessive white smoke when car in idle and high consumption of engine oil.

After a run to Cameron highlands with my wife, when I start my car the next day the engine sign with half an engine lit up popped up. I referred to the manual but it doesn't say much. The engine also started very rough, as though one cylinder is gone. This is because the engine went into self preservation mode. It still can be driven but performance is limited.

I only found out the problem after the workshop plugged in the computer to diagnose the problem.

In a way you can say there was no warning signs although on the run to Cameron the car didn't accelerate that smoothly. Now that it is fixed, the engine revs much cleaner.

Yellow engine warning light pops out. I just changed mine. Warning light came out a week ago, but only had time to change it 2 days back. Didn't actually notice anything wrong with the car. But because I wasn't sure what the fault was then, I dared not use the car after warning light came out. But when it came out, I was just starting my journey from Damansara to Klang, so it survived the journey to and fro without any problems. I didn't notice any loss of performance, but then because of the light, I was taking car at not more than 3,000rpm, though at 110km/h on highways. Also managed to drive it to mech without any signs of engine discomfort, albeit again at "old man" pace :)

Seems to be common problem. When I took it to mech, straight away he said valvetronic motor, which was confirmed by diagnosis computer.

I didn't dare drive mine. Only until the workshop.

Apparently when I sent my to the workshop, the foreman told me that it is a common problem and they have already changed a few prior to mine. Worst is, a few of them had their radiators changed whilst I was there. They are usually 2005 ones. I digress.

Coincidently my wify 1 series had this problem over weekend at Cameron Highlands. Engine check light appear and sluggish slight uphill. I did not bring my PA Soft along. Open the engine cover to access the valvetronic motor. Ketuk2 with stick couple of times to "wake him up" :). Start the engine. The warning light still on but engine response as normal. Drove down to Ipoh via Simpang Pulai. Nervous jugak. You know la downhill to Simpang Pulai so dark. Went to see Shaiful for a check but his diagnostic gadget unable to read my E87. He test drove and said no problem to drive back to Shah Alam. Stop over at Optimum, diagnose and confirm valvetronic motor. Clear fault code and test the motor. It is running fine now but touch wood it will not "merajuk" lagi that soon.

Where do you fix it? Someone told me used one cost couple of hundred but not sure how long will it last. Anybody change to the used motor can comment?

The valvetronic motor is a high precision highly sensitive stepper motor which replaces our butterfly throttle. It‘s subjected to wear and tear. Best not get used one if replacement is imminent.

Last week my engine oil light ON,re feel it after that the engine light is On.After some time it goes OFF.Now days I can feel that the my engine oil consumption

is getting higher.According to my mechanic during last service he told me that the valvetronic motor error appear during diagnose.

So I think all this are the symptoms for the faulty motor.

When the mechanic do the test using diagnostic, you can hear the buzzing sound that the servo/actuator motor is working.

Find below diagram from REALOEM for 1 Series E87 with N46 engine
