How to unplug the wiring from the OBC itself? This might sound kind of silly but I tried but still could not unplug it. A bit scared of breaking something if I pull too hard.

There's a tab on top of the connector itself. If looking at your pic, you need to unlatch the connector by pressing on the tab and lowering the lever to disconnect plug.

I think you guys are advising based on assumption that I want to remove the whole assembly from the dash? The reason I think that is because using all the suggestions e.g "Slide the tap down and the plug will pop out automatically." does not seem applicable (see my first picture)

no not you..with crusher..his initial intent was to remove the plug out right!

bmw7833, in your picture what you mean is to move that thing in the circle in the direction of the arrow? then which direction to pull out the plug?

you press that thing and pull it to your left according to the picture..it will slide out..once you get it, u'll be amazed how simple it is.

Try this..
1. Press the stopper to release the lever.
2. pull the lever as shown in the arrow direction (about 90 deg turn)
3. the plug will automatically come off from the base as you pull the lever.

I had to push much harder than expected on the lever. Kind of reluctant to do it cause afraid of breaking something. But thanks to Jarance's clear picture and instruction gave me the confidence and I managed to remove the OBC.

I'm trying to repair my OBC which currently unreadable, and since I have two weeks of leave, this seems a good time to do it.

Finally you mange to remove the socket... That is the way everyone here trying to tell you to remove the socket.
I think it quite impossible to repair the obc or maybe I'm wrong. If you manage to repair it do share with us.
You can also consider changing it to a used 18 button obc as it have more function and fun to play with.

Finally managed to fix my OBC. Its not perfect, I estimate about 70% restored.

Here it is showing that my number plate light has failed. May not look like much but before the fix, it was totally unreadable.

I followed the instructions http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=457171
Its quite tedious process as I had to disassemble the obc, apply the fix , put it back together and test it in the car. It took me three tries to get to this.

It is quite difficult even with the instructions to take it apart. I wont do it again, really afraid of breaking something.
