Rims and Brake Residues

The E90 has beautiful rims, real shiny and looks really good.But the brake residue builds up very quickly; is that common for UDMs?

The OE Textar pads dust up very fast. Also depends on driver.. my driving will cause my wheels pick up same amount of dust as my wife but at half of her time..

I'm on TRW extra load pads now, lesser dust. What car you comparing with?

That's one of the BMW trademarks :4: Generally speaking the more friction the brake pads generates the more dust it will produce. BMW's are known for their braking performance (for normal and spirited driving anyway) so imo it's an acceptable trade-off fora superior braking performance.

P/s: One can thoroughly wash and clean the wheels. Once dried apply wax on the wheel and let it cure for a good 5 mins. Wipe the wax off the wheels using a micro fibre cloth. With the wax applied ... the dust is more easily to come off during regular wash or just dry wipe the wheel using ordinary cloth. Apply wax on the wheels once a month (or twice during rainy season) :top:

Thanks for the tip guys. My Civic 2.0L used to have some residue but they not as fine as BMW, they don't stick to the rims.

Yes, BMW brakes are effective indeed, it slows the car down quickly but in a very balanced way. I like.

Looks like I will be busy waxing my rims this weekend ...

Orion ... Best solution is to wash twice a week! I am glad my rims come with a smoked finish, that makes it less obvious to brake dust. :0)

Mine are painted 'brake-dust-grey' So no worries on brake dust showing on rims. Can last till about a month!!! But I still wash them every alternate day, rain or shine

AB, I am still weary on using more than mild soap to wash my rims...

Had bad experiences with so called 'magic cleaners' in my life. Many claim that their product are not corrosive, but after prolonged use, I noticed that it does corrode the paint and to some extend the metal as well!

So do not throw caution to the wind alas you're willing to spend some moolah refurbishing... Just mho

Thanks for the heap up.. I don't wash car regularly, only once a week at most. So the wheels dirt are extremely stubborn.. I tried using thinner.. also need hard scrubbing to get rid of the brake dust residue.. but clear coat also naik.. *&^%$#@!!

If I get these magical spray, I also won't use it on a regular basis lor. Perhaps once a couple of months, like what u said, mild soap still my preference.

@astroboy, just be cautious when using the Sonax Extreme Wheel Cleaner yah. I've used it a few times (while also testing it out with CarPro IronX) and both are very effective indeed in removing the stubborn brake dust. But the brake dust that they 'dissolved' permanently stained my concrete floor rust-colored....and, yes, before you asked, I did flush the floor thoroughly afterwards.

Usually claying will do the trick bro ... It also helps if you're OCD lol

With that amount of spokes X 4 rims, I'd probably take ages just to clay each of them bro!

Eggie ... I am already frus with my 193M rims. The narrower slots need to use fingers to clean out then also worry if push too fast/hard then somebody gonna get the hurt. Hahahaha ...

You guys should really consider trying this brush out.



It's Meg's Versa Angle Body Brush. It's meant to be use for the car body but I found that the bristle is long and soft enough that it's very useful in washing my multi-spokes wheels. The bristle are around 3" long so they can get to those difficult to reach areas between the spokes.

i did a test using sonax wheel cleaner and rim protector


this is before the cleaning , my weekly brakedust.

during cleaning process got "blood" come out

then use high pressure water jet to clean it off ,

result is

i would say the product work , without any actual brushing but to make it super clean you need to brush it a little but lesser compare even to maguire

after applied the rim protector

will test after 1 week see how much dust it created

also since my parking lot are not using cement , no residue left over.
