hey guys, ytd night i parked at road side (the MPPJ just tampal the road so it's quite elevated from the grassy/muddy road side where ppl park the car) when i wanted to drive my car away, my front wheel reach the tar road and i pedal a bit la coz need to go up the tar road. after both my front wheels are on top of the road already, my rear wheel started to skid (due to the mud) and it skidded sideways (almost masuk longkang). i had no choice but to ask the owners of the car behind me (kancil) to drive out to give me space reverse to the dry-er spot (apparently the spot i park is muddy/wet).then after i slowly drive up to the road, i say thanks to him. the kancil driver said "apalaa... BMW so char wan ahh... " :dong:have you guys face these kinda problems before? can guide me this newbie to rear wheel drive car how to handle such situation? when my front wheel on hard surface while rear wheel in wet/muddy surface. and especially the front wheel is on elevated road (the MPPJ tampal the road so tebal.. :102: ) Thanks a lot for advice !

Taiko, mind to share apa itu DTC ?
Thanks in advance.

Dynamic Traction Control, meant for use in icy road where the rear wheel traction is regulated to prevent excessive wheel spin on slippery surface. Under the central air vent, there's a DTC button. Press the button once to trigger DTC. Hit it again to off.

there's nothing much u can do if both the driven wheels are on slippery surface, like mud...

Mate, I believe e46 do have the DTC equivalent, those days, BMW calls it ASC (Automatic Stability Control). The button should be below your radio panel, just above your gear lever area. Try it :)

I believe they all worked differently even though all of them are traction control... Some cut engine power, some use individual wheel braking to mimicking LSD effect... So go read up on what type of traction control your car has and how it works....

My car's traction control is my right foot... :p and also the mechanical clutch-type LSD....

Only the last batch of the cars have DSC, the N42 together with the M3s.

The earlier batch is ASC, then you have ASC + T (Traction).

ASC works in understeering situation by reducing engine power, while ASC + T has automated braking abilities on the rear wheels.

DSC works on both front and rear brakes, so it will help in oversteering situations as well. DTC is a subset function of DSC whereby it allows the wheel to spin more before the electronics intervenes. There is no human that can mimic traction control systems, no matter how sensitive your right foot is, or even if you are born with 4 legs and the car is equipped with 4 brake pedals.

In the ///M cars, there is M Dynamic Mode whereby you can set the amount of wheel spin before the electronics take over :)

So sifu Bundy, what does the E90 DTC do? What do we put it on for?

On the E90, E60 and beyond, its actually DSC Plus, that's why you have DTC.

DTC has two useful applications, one like mentioned by AB (in snowy/icy roads). Imagine if you at a traffic light junction and trying to take off, with the wheels spinning, DSC will intervene and you may get stucked.

Technically, let's say if the rear wheels are spinning 16% faster than the front, the electronics would intervened and cut off/reduced engine power and it the car still oversteers, individual braking will be applied, either front left/right depending on the corner direction.

Now with DTC switch on, the electronics will only intervened if the difference in wheel spin exceeds 20%. In our Malaysian context it means, more spirited driving around corners!! :)

Another feature of BMW's traction control system is DSC can be completely switched off. In the event you screwed up, just jammed the brakes and DSC would be activated automatically.

Clearer now. I thought it's only for the first application - slippery conditions. :1:

Well, it's pretty similar to Ferrari's traction control system where the little knob on the steering indicates 5 different settings. In a BMW you have two levels, except the ///M cars where you can set the wheel slip percentage via the I-Drive.

As far as I know (few years back), only Ferrari and BMW allows you to do that.
