WTFProton for end-of-life vehicle policy under Budget 2011KUALA LUMPUR: Proton Holdings Bhd hopes the Government will consider under Budget 2011 the end-of-life vehicle (EVL) policy to sustain the automotive industry in the country.Group managing director Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir said the EVL policy provided an immediate impact to the whole ecosystem as implemented under the stimulus package a year ago.“We understand it is a very costly exercise but we are willing to sit with the Government (to discuss) on how both industry players and Government can play role,” he told reporters at the company’s Aidilfitri Open House yesterday.Syed Zainal said old vehicles should be taken off the roads as the total automotive industry volume had come to a saturation stage.He said it was timely for the Government to provide packages and incentives to ensure that old cars which were not safe and “green” were not on the road.“This is evidenced in other countries like Japan, South Korea, Singapore and even Indonesia,” he added.Syed Zainal said the government should also provide incentives for green technology usage as well as research and development (R&D) grant to promote innovation in line with the New Economic Model.The move would encourage R&D activities in the country and hopefully, the technology could be commercialised, he said.“That at least provides a catalyst from the Government to facilitate automotive players like Proton and consumers to start being aware of green technology on vehicles,” he added. — Bernama

BN will lose their votes from orang kampungs, and thus the General Election, if this is adopted. I can't believe I used to give my heart and soul to a company that now is just behaving like a spoilt brat.

If cars are priced competitively and we've more transparent vehicle inspection company, then we'll talk about end of life policy. Countries like Japan have end of life policy because their new cars are affordable.

I'd rather buy a RM30k E36, 13 yrs old car, than brand new Proton or Perodua. Neither the 2 Ps can offer driving experience of a BMW.
 
if our car prices are not so so distorted, then we can consider the policy.
As of now, we have 9 and even 11 years car loan, that shows how expensive buying a car is in Malaysia.

However, there are very un-roadworthy cars running on the roads which are really a walking time bomb. These cars are with conditions beyond scrapping. these are what my fren termed as 'pick up car'... Another other km the car travels, u have to stop and pick up parts falling off from the car... haha...
 
End life policy? Sure... I'm all for it.... but first:-

1. Scrap crazy taxes on cars
2. Improve public transport system
3. Increase GDP per capita

If you wanna compare, lets make a comparison then:

GDP Per Capita - Purchasing Power Parity (USD):
Japan = 32,700
South Korea = 28,100
Singapore = 52,200
Indonesia = 4,000
Malaysia = 14,900

Price of E90 BMW 320i (USD):
Japan = 54,088
South Korea = 40,997
Singapore = 139,886
Indonesia = 58,184
Malaysia = 76,659

Price as a multiple of GDP per capita (Price/GDP):

Japan = 1.65x
South Korea = 1.46x
Singapore = 2.68x
Indonesia = 9.55x
Malaysia = 5.14x

If you look at the results above, you'll notice that countries with low multiples have good public transport infrastructure and/or relatively low vehicle prices. Even Singapore with the most expensive BMW has half the multiple of Malaysia and its car prices is a reflection of their govt policy to limit the number of vehicles due to land constraints. Even in Indonesia, the car is cheaper than in Malaysia.

C'mon la Proton... you gotta give better argument than that... you're telling me that my 13 year old E38 is not as safe as your new saga?!? .... :stupid: Just be honest la... ppl rather buy used car than a new proton....

If you can solve that, you don't need EV(i)L policy....
 
dont forget....waja was the bmw from the east. the east they meant must be the ladang kelapa sawit on the east side of the factory....

I hate this company more and more, what with their international embarrassment giving a hard time to Tony Fernandez in F1, and tin milo cars on the roads, and indirectly being the cause of imported cars so bloody expensive!! Pray everyday this company goes bankrupt.
 
I support the policy because it will then be the end of life for BN sooner which mean the same for P-rot-on as well.

I wouldn't go as far as praying that the company goes bust. Think of all the people who will lose their jobs.

However I would pray that the government of the day, be it BN or any future parties who will eventually (wishful thinking) take over, will abolish all this unreasonable taxes levied upon vehicle owners. I still find it hard to understand why I'm paying RM1,600.00 on my roadtax per year for a car that is 15 years of age while some rich datuk or tan sri pays a quarter of that for their half a million Mercedes.

So hopefully that day will come soon when our government realize we're not ATMs anymore and treat us like the people we deserve to be treated as.
 
that's why i never buy a proton, they already got too much from us. it will not go bankrupt as long as BN in power.
 
Saw the MD comment in news last nite. Policy will make on the road car more safe & environ friendly??? Which car is less safe on the road now???:thefinger::thefinger::thefinger:
 
Actually, we are indirectly being forced to buy new car now as the insurance companies are making it difficult for the older cars to renew insurance policy.

ideally, all cars should go for inspection when past certain age, to make sure that these old cars are road worthy. The older BMWs is only a fraction of the lot. However, this is where the shit starts. Who does the inspection? PUSPAKOM.. And it aledi can't cope with the number of cars lining up to do inspection and also the integrity of the system. With so many loopholes and blatant corruption, implementing compulsory inspection would be doing more harm than good.
 
Ever wondered why Proton announced they're in favor of this policy just before the recall ? It;s gonna cost them RM5 million for the recall, so they have to make the money back la...thats why hoping old car get recycled and the can sell more Proton to cover for the lost RM5 million!

Conspiracy theory...hahaha
 
For any car maker, having EVL is their wet dream, especially so when Proton's market is >60% local.. They were selling so so well in their golden years when Proton is basically the people's only choice. then came P2, Korean and NAZA which took a crunch of their slice of pie...

If the old old protons are still running, who to sell new protons to?? Overseas market is hopeless for Proton. For the same money, they have a lot more choices. Its only here that Proton has less competition in the same price segment. In other words, it is another jaguh kampung. Can't survive outside Malaysia.

Proton can't survive long being a car maker, it doesn't have the economy of scale in this competitive industry. It is an industry where volume matters, low volume will drive cost per car up and makes it uncompetitive. It shud really consider taking on the role as assembly plant for other makes. That would be the long term survival plan.. But as long as TDM is around, he won't endorse Proton being an assembler for other makes.
