power or torque..?

Aiya bro, dont need to twist and turn....there is an option out there, no forced induction nor big cc engine....Its the new 6pot engine with valvetronic, lightest production engine in the market, ample torque at low rpm, sufficient bhp at high rpm (218bhp for a 2.5 liter engine) and its made by BMW. :D

or if still craving for more power and even more torque, then the 335 (3 litre twin turbo has got even more power and alot more torque - peak torque at 1400 or 2000 rpm and claimed minimal lag!!!), and road tax is just at the edge of being painful........3 litres - RM2200 per annum....after 3 litres, the roadtax gets overbearingly painful.....
 
bmwcar, yeah I know...but selespeed said engine must not be too big and no forced induction. Me think the 335 will change a lot people's perception towards forced induction in the years to come :)

err..correction.. the 335 comes with "Bi-Turbo" and not Twin.. its technically different..

anyway, TORQUE RULES...

i think you should have a bus or truck engine in your car. that gives you plenty of torque at very low rpm. effortless acceleration...:D

It's more like parallel rather then in sequence.. so it's a twin turbo... 1 turbine for each 3 cylinder...
The E60 535d is a sequential bi-turbo... working in sequence (one after another) and not together..
 
Actually sequential turbos suck. er...well all turbos 'suck'.

get it? they 'suck'. er...nevermind.

Anyway, sequential turbo systems provide low boost. being small and all and only speced to run on one bank of cylinders, and another on the other.

So if you need big power, ditch the 2 baby snails and get a proper sized turbo for the job.

Actually, Daniel, what you just described is, as Fabian pointed out, 2 turbos running in parallel, ie. a twin turbo setup like in the 993/996/997TT. Sequential turbos are those running in line; with a little snail for low RPMs and a valve diverting boost to a bigger snail at higher RPMs.
 
every few months we seem to have this same argument. ;)

peak torque/hp in itself isnt very relevant. what's more important is (A) the area under the torque/hp curve, and (B) where the "fat" part of the curve occurs.

(A) u can have a very high peak torque/hp but if the curve falls off drastically on either side of the peak, your useful torque/hp isn't much. a "fat" curve is where you get a majority of the peak torque/hp throughout a good portion of the rev range. this means you have useful torque/power in a wide rpm band, and not a narrow useless band up in 6000rpms.

(B) power/torque is only useful if you get to use it. for that reason, race engines are tuned very differently than street engines. when you're racing, you spend a lot of time in the high rpm range so that's where you want to make your peak power. having peak power at 2500rpms is useless to a racer cos he hardly spends any time down there. on the other hand, mrs tan from next door needs good torque and power from 1500-3500rpms cos that's all she's gonna use ferrying the kids to school and back.

so you need to know where peak hp/torque is as well as your own driving style.

Speaking in extremes.....

1) Big Truck engine
2) Sport Bike Engine

I like high revs and HP... so I'm a BHP guy. Something about engines screaming away at 8k rpms and beyond.
 
Might I suggest a high revving big-ish capacity flat 6 engine as the solution to all this torque or bhp crap? Best of both worlds, really, but then again, I am biased!

with 3xx bhp,
and 3xx Nm torque..

but the engine is flat-6..
not inline-6..
