Yesterday i went to melaka, on my way, stop by at Lukut. I went to buy something at the shop and left my wife in the car with engine running...after about 30 minutes, i went back to my car and found out the aircond is not cold as normal...n i see the temperature goes up..i check the engine, fan running, water just top up...i call my mechanic, he advice me to continue drive because too long left the engine idling, fan is not enough to cover the engine temperature + hot weather..follow what he said...the temperature back to normal...Is it normal for this car to have temperature high during idling?then i test it back...running the engine for about 40 minutes...temperature went up slowly...then i press the paddle to rpm 2 at least, temperature went back normal..anyone got this kind of experience? i use e36

In my ex-e36, I did notice that in traffic jams, the temp will rise a bit higher than mid-point (which was the normal temp during non-traffic jam driving). I had always believed it was due to a combination of lower air flow while stationary and the hot exhaust gases from the car in front (and all around). Once I reached open road again, the temp would come back down. An extended "stop" with the engine running in hot weather, would often result in the aircond not being as cold as normal. On the car is moving, then the aircond would get cold once again. To see this would require an extended stop in hot weather, I think your 30min stop can be considered an extended stop.

Experienced the same thing with my E30 and E32 ......... changed the fan clutch, and everything back to normal again.

Its either the fan clutch, termostat or the wiring connected to it. When your car is in an extended stop, the air inside your engine bay gets hot and if the auxillary fan is not automatically switched on to disperse the hot air, temp will surely rise. What I did as a temporary measure (before I have the time to let the air cond guy check the clutch etc,), just step lightly on the accelerator while putting your gear in N when stuck in extended jam and hopefully you can feel the cold air coming out again. Once you feel the cold air, its an indication that the auxillary fan is on. Mine was not due to a faulty clutch, Naidu said its some loose wiring connected to the fan clutch.
