Need advise on the M5 steering. I just acquired a M5 steering from a chop shop. My Mechanics was saying that it might not fit due to the column issue. Has anyone encounter this issue before as I thought there should be no problem to install this steering on e39. The type of steering is as attached.

if it is M5 steering then it is a pre-sept 2000 M5 steering so it will only fit pre-facelifted e39 without modification...

thanks for the advise. Looks like I will need modification. What type of mod will be involved?

BMW change the single stage airbag system to dual stage airbag system on Mar 1999. Base on many discussion i read, both system are not inter change. U have to make sure u buy the correct steering. If u not good in DIY, then u may give up the idea.

I myself plan to modify the 2003 M3 steering to my 1997 e39. It may be impossible but i would like to give it a try. Some said it is do-able.

hpteh, what year your e39 mfg?

Mine is manufactured year 2003. If modification is not do-able, you mind considering a swap? Of course depending on condition la...

He's looking to install the SMG steering la

Can u get the part number of the steering? I am curious why the steering can not fit into your 2003 e39. It should fit.

Will pay a visit to my mechanic tomorrow to see the status. Thanks bmw7883 for the link.

can you post a picture of the back of the steering? I think can tell straightaway from the back

One other point to note, I couldnt really see the stitching from the photo above, but if its got tricolor stiching then its a real M5 steering, if it only have black stitching then its a normal sport steering. A lot of sellers wrongly advertised the old sport steering as M5 steeeing.

Haywire, attached are the pic of the back of steering. It was just rewrapped. Before the rewrapped, it was with tricolor stitch. I guess it should be ori M5. Hope you can advise.

Definitely a pre March 99 steering wheel, wont fit your car. You can see the slip ring is on the wheel itself.

See here (example of a pre-99 fitment):

You need one that looks like this from the back:

PS: Yazmeen was looking for this wheel for his car some time ago, dont know if he still wants it. Ask him if you wanna sell it off.

hpteh, this one is damn rare single stage airbag steering!

Uncle Aziz also looking one if i remember correctly.

Between, how much u want to sell? PM me the price pls, thanks.

The 1st post picture is the real steering picture?

That is not the actual pic... will post it later. The only difference is that my steering has just been rewrap but without the tricolor stitch. PM sent.

Btw hpteh, once you sold this one off, get the proper post 2002 sport steering, do some justice to your 2003 car.
