Guys, I have a question and doubt. Why my e36 318 auto gearbox had a sort of late changing gear during first drive in the morning. It's not difficult to shift, but it seems like the gear take some time with a bit high rpm before the gear change from 20km/h to 40 km/h and to 60 km/h. It's only happen during the 1st drive in the morning or stop for a long time(more than 6 hours). Once the car on the run the thing did not happen again. Is this a problem?Did any you guys experience this? thanks for your comments and advise.

Maybe yr gear box pressure is not sufficent during cold drive. What is your mileage? have you ever change your gear oil? All this information is require for us to diagnose the gearbox. We had experience before some e36 that during cold start and after engaging the gear the car doest move....some say your box kong but after inspection it is just need to reset the dms and diagnose the gearbox contro unit.

Bro Hessly,

The mileage is 143,000km.
I had changed the gear oil once when I juz bought the car but did not flush it as the workshp said no need to flush.
I'm travelling to KL next week and plan to visit a good workshop to flush my gearbox and change the filter. Hopefully this can solve the problem.
Beside the this problem, the gearbox (or prop shaft, not sure yet) also producing 'klok klok' sound during low rpm, soud something loosen during rotating. Once its reach 60km/h and above the noise gone. Without this sound my car should be very quite.

a few factors may come into consideration,

1. oil viscosity changes overtime due to heat, and abuse and some kind of oxidation- thus you won't have same grade of oil after 100k of mileage

2. minor leaks in gasket will cause pressure loss-as per hessly, could also be due to oil viscosity

3. wear and tear parts in the internal gearbox

4. sensors and programs controlling the autobox to shift later due to lower operating temperatures of both the engine and autobox - this you got to confirm with other drivers

as for your kok-klok sound, check both the rubber guibo and center bearing
if you are changing those, do change the gearbox rubber mounts and engine mounts, as these are what i call "in a system" - better to change all

Bro K.M

What Teejay say is true, some might want to change every thing, mounting bearing etc but some kiasu only want to rectify the cause if up the the owner hehehe got $$ can ma no $$ just change the fauty part loh...

When are u coming to KL bro K.M?

Yeah it is normal. Same situation for my ride too even after I had done my gear box refurbushing. Some ppl even say that it may be your valve body problem. One of my foreman thought me to start the car while the auto gear in "N" position so that the ATF will circulate. According to him, if you start the car in "P" position, the ATF will not circulate. I feel that the gear transmission a bit smoother by following his way. Try it out lah. Cheers.

New tips...thanks a lot man!!. Definitely will give a try.

Last night took wifey for a ride in my babe for a dinner. When I'd push the car to 140km/h wifey complaining that she feel like sitting in 'old express bus'...Damn the 'klik-klok' sound!!..the harder i push the car the sound become more obvious coming from under the body. Suspecting sumthing is wrong with the prop shaft.

The Bimmer akin to an "OLD EXPRESS BUS".... Aiyoo, that's like a slap in the face. I'm sure it pains you to hear such comment. Quick-quick, better rectify the "klik-klok" and bring pleasure and comfort back to your passangers. (hahahahaha)

i have the same gear shift thingy in the morning and when the engine is left cold . i have ask many work shop they tell me tht is very normal . all of them say the same thing ....cheers

Isnt that what i said? sigh.....
(sometimes i wonder why do i even bother....)

Hahaha mine too, very normal. Every morning takes a while to shift, but the sound is abnormal.....really got to check.

Hmm..since many people saying the delay gear shift is normal...I will assume it as normal also..

But for the 'klik-klok'...Hessly, I need your help to look over it this saturday...very embarassing sound for a BMW...sometimes the sound is there..sometimes it just dissappear...very sakit telinga listening to it....Happy Motor in Penang couldn't identify the sound source...

Sure come over and we have a look....

er, never heard that while in P mode the atf does not circulate ...

AFAIK, the oil circulate at every mode..

My car is geeting better now after servicing at BMWorks a few days ago. The late late shift gear become less obvious now. The culprit could be the ATF and filter.
The workshop in Penang had use only ESSO brand ATF not the original BMW ATF. They dun even change my filter when they changed the ATF. Dammmned with that workshop!!
Thanks to Vasu and Hessly for giving a good services to my car and identifying the problem. The Klik-Klok problem also seems gone on its own. On my way back from KL to Penang, I'd push the car up to 170km/h...the is no klik-klok like the old express bus..the only sound left is coming from the prop shaft free play at low rpm which I'd been told it is normal for E36.
