Klonk sound going on bumps

Folks,I've installed M-tech springs on my E36. Ride is on Bilstein blacks.The spring pads, absorber mountings, bump stops are new.Going on bumps at slow speeds causes a 'klonking' sound on the left suspension. What could be the cause?Posting it here because I think this applies to all UDMs and not only the E36/3.Thanks.

did you replace the gaskets that is between the absorber mounting and body?

a simple 0.50 cents part can make alotta noise if not replaced

Hi bro,

Yr car is 4 or 6 pots? The spring is for 4 or 6 pots?
The sound seems come from the spring.
Not sure the spring for E36 can fit for both 4 and 6 pots.
Some says can & some says can't. Any advice from sifus outthere?
Mine is for 4 pots lowered using 2nd hand eibach spring wt std boge absober. quite low since under carriage touch the bump if too high and goin to fast.

It's for 6 pot. Even if it is for 4 pot, I don't think it will affect the rear suspension.

teejay, when you say the gaskets, are you referring to the spring pads or the thin-looking rubber surrounds?

yo affan,

i had the similiar prob with u too.. its the spring pad.changed it then ok alredy. i changed it Rear Coil Pad RM35.

if u rapat with yr mech, i think u can get it free too cox the pieces as u can see is all lying around, especially those mechs that have serviced lots of absorbers n suspension..

this is the washer gasket that sits between the absorber mountings and car body this part is normally omotted when new mountings are installed, but sometimes if the older ones are still good the mech will always re-use them,after a while you will find the sound recurring coz the gaskets are all scrapped off.....

there is also the other rubber spring pad that corresponds to the type of spring installed
if you can find the thicker pad, it's about 5mm thicker then the standard ones, i believe this thicker pads will dampen the sound of a higher rebound rate of the lowered coils, but i dont think it will contribute to this particular sound.....

also check correct tightening torque, as this part involves vertical pressured force all the time

I did ask if there is a thicker pad. This would improve ride height for the rear.
the gasket you are referring too was also changed. I thought you were referring to this thin looking (almost paper-like) ring seated on top of the springs.

arrgh another week at the mechs. this coming weekend will be my 5th weekend in a row.

affan,can be your front ball joints..

had the similar problem, but the ball joint look okay/fine.. but once installed again, the loose klonking noise came out..

The infamous cracked rear absorber mounting which is so common with E36? :dunno:

The E46 suffers the same fate too. I just replaced mine last month.

Problem solved:

Spring not seated properly. No more sound.
by the way, absorber mounting, spring pads, gaskets, bump stop, plastic covers all new.
