Seeking some opinions on ICE solutions for the E30.Do not intend to butcher the door panels, so the front speakers will need to stay in the stock kick panel position. These take what, 5.5" mid bass units?What about the sub? ok the use a sealed box in the boot?I suppose the ideal solution would be to fabricate an enclosure behind the ski hatch with the sub firing into the car?What have you pple done?Pls advise.

From what I heard, the best positioning IS the kick panel, the only problem for this is always GETTING IT RIGHT ... the fabrication/installation, setting and tuning. The existing kick panel can take in the size u mention.
You can also pm Calvin Tan and ask his opinion, he's got wicked set-up in his baby.
On the sub, you can go for open or close, depends on the sub character itself..eg. JL can be run without enclosure. For myself, my 6.5 inch mid at the kick panel and run my 12" with a mono in a 1+ cubic enclosure, lose the space, but easier tak pening-pening.

I'll always go for a sealed box as you can measure the exact volume that the sub is designed as it is paramount to produce the necessary wavelengths for the beat. Will snap a picture of the sub in my Giulia when I get the car back. Go for a good 10" unit if you don't want too big an enclosure. It's adequate for audiphile reproduction.

Ideally, a small sealed sub with a 10 inch sub shud do the trick unless you're a hard core bass junkie who loves his bass deep and loud. They are simple boxes with a hole for the woofer to be mounted in. The rear wave and front wave are sealed from each other by the enclosure. Sealed boxes have great power handling, low frequency extension, and are known for produce accurate "tight" sounding bass. If you listen to a wide range of music and like well defined bass, this is the way to go.
Ported (also called vented, tuned or bass reflex) enclosures are similar to sealed enclosures except they add a port or vent (typically a length of PVC pipe) to the enclosure design. Vented boxes are only slightly more difficult to build than a sealed box but must be "tuned" with the right area (diameter) and length of port for the enclosure/woofer combination. This is usually not a problem as the woofer manufacturer typically supplies this information. AVOID buying those ready made boxes with a port done on em as you see in most car audio shop as they are of general design and may not be set up / tuned to match the parameters of your OWN sub. The function of the port is to "tune" the enclosure so that the rear wave of the speaker enhances the front wave of the speaker. This typically results in a woofer system with a higher efficiency (it plays louder with less power). The disadvantages of this design are lower power handling and poor response below the port tuning frequency. This is ideal if you have the boot space to spare and love your music/bass loud and deep.
As for the speakers, suggest that you replace the stock speakers with some decent after market ones .... retaining them at their original location and then gauge the difference in sound quality. If you don't like what you hear or feel that you're missing something, you can then start looking at larger purpose built kick panels and other mounting options. Like what Skar said, do check out a few E30s that have non stock ICE systems to get a feel of what is possible within your budget.

Since you will not even allow your tiniest cousin to sit in the rear, your best option will be to get the biggest subwoofer you can find, whose wavelength fits within the width of your car. Build an enclosure for it and lay it on the rear seat.

Some good ideas there.... but what about a budget set up? I was thinking good HU, a modest amp, and some co-axials or even components to go into the kickpanels.
Specifically :
HU... who makes good budget/mid range stuff? If anyone can recommend a specifc make or model known to be the dogs bollocks...lets hear about it!
if coax's ... which ones? are coax's the way to go? if components .... which ones? Who makes good comps at budget price level? To keep costs low, i'd go with stock locations i.e. the kickpanels.... 5.25in max i guess .... if compas, where would the tweeters go? 'Sail' panels? Seen photos of some ori stuff made by ITT but much fabrication required if other tweeters are going in there..... where else could they go?

Other bits? cables etc.... this adds up.... perhaps narrow down to the most important bits e.g. speker cables, interconnects maybe....
The idea i guess is to build on that gradually as funds become available .... or NOT :lol:.... my car is getting on in age I'm afraid tight bass may just shake parts loose.....
So maybe.... just maybe.... subs could be added later etc. In the mean time the comps/coax's must hold the fort .......
