Dear Sifus and frens,As a newbie, i'm curious about the maintenance... how frequent must i visit workshop, if i owned E39...?Any guideline perhaps, based on past experiences... We are not talking about cost here... only focus on time wise...Thank you in advance.Cheers..

If you own UDM, mechanic will become your good friend..:4:

Honestly, repair the car in one shoot better than revisit the workshop. For me, i seldom go to workshop..hehehh..just ignore some small and known problem lar..The best time to replace parts is when u regular service the car..save the time.

As what bmw7833 said, you can do a major repair/replacement at one go (of course more $$$). Given the age of our cars, some components are bound to fail which could not be detected during major repair/replacenment work. Another option is repair/replace as and when components failed.

In my case, I did a 1 week major repair/replacement work when I bought my car. Over a 6 months period, most of the other minor components failures surfaced and rectified. Now only go into workshop for lube change every 10,000 km.

if ya worried of frequent visit to workshops then BMW is not the car you need in ya porch .... :)

AB,

Don't scare people like this lah........ btw, i do know a guy who seems to strike lottery every other month.

You guys rock!

Thank you so much... at least i have to be mentally and off course, financially prepared to become future E39 UDM..!

TT on friday? aiseh...cannot la... i have another commitment. some other days hopefully... (i'm afraid once i stepped into one off those babies, i dun wanna go home..... :) )

If you plan on getting an old, used BMW(and E39s are old and many are VERY used), it should NOT be your one and only car. Have a 2nd spare car.

My E39 is a 1996 model, and I've had it since 2008.So far, it has served me well. But based on my previous experience with BMWs, I know my baby has a surprise waiting for me just around the corner. Its not a question of IF, but WHEN. When that happens, I have my 1995 Audi A6(C4) to drive as a backup car.Had the Audi since 2005, and the only failure was a broken passenger side power window switch.I can thrash the Audi within an inch of its life and it will still keep going, but its also no fun to drive.

With so many complaints about BMW's reliability in this forum and from around the world, it just boggles my mind how BMW managed to become the top selling luxury brand in the world.

Cos a BMW is like that hot chic by the bar with a hint of attitude about the way she carries herself. You know she's going to be trouble. You know she'll be a handful. But you didn't come to the bar looking to play safe ;) lol :D

My standby car is a Proton Gen2. As reliable as they come, but not terribly exciting to drive :D

how is this la....from "How Frequent must i visit the workshop"...suddenly become "chick addicts (spell: chicadies)" topic dy :D

Smile on our faces...relishing the JOY of driving...could be all-hyped up marketing brain-washing, but we already are brain-washed then!! Damn good car to drive!

Don't worry too much....

From my own experience of owning a manual E30 325i since 1990, no major problem so far. Most of the repairs were wear and tear. Most of the time, I'm kind of expected when the next repair gonna be. So I'm always mentally and financially prepared. The car is still up and running and can out run and outplay many JDMs. Never done major overhaul as yet, only the top overhaul once.

I also have 1989 E34 520i for the past 5 years. So far, only the torque converter failed. Replace with secondhand unit for RM400. Still service my family well till today despite lazy engine... What to expect from M20B20!

Latest in the family is a Monaco Blue 2008 E90 325i. Well... the best so far in terms of handling and everything....

For me, I won't go for any other brand for any equivalent amount of money be it used unit or brand new....

My two cents...

Thx guys,

a lot of useful information here...

i've asked one of my friends (non beemer).. he said.. "Hey... BMW is only for those earns more than 10K / month..." which, i'm not.. :(

I don't earn RM10K a month.. heck still far from it..

That's why I only manage to get a used one.

But still, bimmers give you heartache, but it gives you fulfilment.

When you see the check engine light, or gearbox light, or even any light.. your heart stops a little while.

But when it doesn't.. the feeling is outta this world..

I'd say everything you go through, the price, the time.. all feels like everything is worth it to give you this perfect moment with you driving your BMW.

It's like taking care of a baby. Pure joy. (until she poops)
