for the 1st link, i previously went to OKR autocity last mth but was unable to locate the car so left the area.

the 1st concern when buying a bimmer, i must look at the mileage if it passes the 100k km mark ensure a top overhaul is done, u can look at the grey sealant gasket at the engine head. like my e90 was 117k kms when i bought it, it was previously overhauled, try to smell the exhaust fumes too make sure no burnt smell, after starting the car & engine warmed up, switch it off, open the engine oil cover & smell inside too for burnt smell.

bro just curious, what will happen to the engine if it hasnt had a top end job after 100K mileage? 100K is not really a lot of mileage i think, or am i wrong?

sorry i am quite new to Beemers still although i have joined for a long time. appreaciate every advice here. still trying to read through everything here.

im not sure, but i read thru other forums & most of them quoted that for a bimmer, once it reached 100km mark it needs an overhaul due to our hot climate something like that.

i went to see a 318ci last month, it has clocked more than 160k kms, but i checked the gasket seems have been overhauled but when i asked the owner he said no....was puzzled there for a moment....engine overhaul also dunno ah?
but anyways i walked away from that car.

when buying a bimmer from a used car they wont know anything bout the car at all, so u have to depend on your knowledge so that u wont get cheated.

Not all cars need an overhaul la bro. My car is approaching 300k soon and the engine is still fine, touch wood. The gearbox has finally needed to be overhauled at 294k last month after not having a single oil change since new.

thanks bro, i read through your journey with your 530i with great interest.

so i take it all the auto e39 gearbox use the lifetime oil? thats a very good mileage for the same factory oil.

Totally agreed with you "My car is approaching 300k soon and the engine is still fine, touch wood" me too approaching 210k engine still :top:

Bro...the first car is problematic...engine block cracked. I know the owner... The 2nd I don't think is original MSport...beige interior? Comfort seats? And I think the external door trimming is chrome...MSport is all shadowline/flat black. TQ

Plug in scanner to scan
If we don't have one, then how?..hope e39er could share the tips for the beginner, as I'm also looking for an e39. My tested unit was a 1997 528 cbu. mileage already over 300,000km, owner told me never opened engine & gearbox, but the engine running smoothly, the only problems are 'clunking' sound came from front suspensions (from the bill, the suspension are replaced a year ago)..who could assist me with scanner?

I have bmw scanner 1.4. I always helped ppl scan used bmw car. If gearbox until 300000km never open before meaning is time to repair the gearbox.

Plan to view the car tomorrow, a few potential cars available...can you teach me how to use the scanner and lend me? Or should we come together and let you do the diagnose...how to contact you? Really interested in 1 unit in Bukit Jalil used car dealer..

At this moment of writing my car (1997) has clocked 368,000KM original mileage. Engine & Gearbox ultra virgin despite trashing it after all these 16 years. BMW engines & transmissions are robust or at least i can vouch confidently with the M52 engine & the 5HP18 slushbox. Touchwood!

Reason behind this is because of the oil service interval of 10,000KM & 40,000KM for tranny religiously since 1997. Can't go wrong with the formula.

Request for full history of service if you can bro.

Wah...good for you bro! This 1997 528 was maintained by M Speed from day 1 by current owner, it is standard by all mean..any disadvantage of 1997 528 other than much higher roadtax? Owner want RM21.5k for it. The second one also 1997 528, maintained by Ah Lai of Kuchai Lama, full m sport kitted, m-par rims, asking price RM30k nego.(current owner used to be our club guest). Which one should I go for?
Bro Powerhaus, sorry for hijacking the thread!

528 power to weight ratio much better. Of course comes at the price of higher roadtax. Best to view and drive both cars and if there' supporting documents such as repair/service bills, it'll be to your advantage for you to make a decision. Feel how both car's power delivery and gear changes if it's smooth and hear out for other noises as well. Check for body panels alignment at the same time just to be sure no works has been done to the panels. One tell tale sign if car has been in an accident.

Nonetheless, plugging a scanner in is the best way to check overall health status akin to a MRI on a car.
