anyone pls help.....anybody encounter this problem? my car suddenly got this....engine shaking on cold start i.e. on morning or left after a few hours....but it run smoothly after reaching normal operating temperature....it was surely not the mounting as all the mounting were fine...on cold start,(a/c auto on) the rpm start at 1k++ rpm then 1-2 second later it around 800-900and engine shaking badly.....if i turn off the a/c the rpm goes down to 500....help needed....what to do? :stupid:i've bought CRC mass air flow cleaner, will try to clean those MAF tonighti dunno what my engine type, but my car is facelifted e46 318 2.0 ckd 2004

Check your ignition coil. Had similar problem 3 weeks ago with my M54. Coil no 5 not working. Replaced all 6 coils plus 6 spark plugs.

mine only 4 potter, but will checked it thru....
tried to check those ignition myself last night,
but turn out clueless after seeing those coil.....
as dont wanna ruin anything, now going to workshop....
will update later.... :top:
mine is N42 i think as i saw same engine from other thread

Your description matches my engine behavior during cold start, but the shaking in my case is mild, it is noticable but not annoyingly bad. Mine is also N42, and just changed the four rubber mounts.

I think it is quite a common problem for aging bmw to vibrate a little during cold start. If the coils are shot then it will be shaking like elvis.
Me and friend is trying many thing to resolve this for an E46 318i N42, did some valvetronics relearn using DIS, it is slightly better only. Next is to replace throttle body with a used/cleaned one.

My M54 will slight vibration too during cold start too. Actually , I suspect it is the DME start up sequence/map which is causing the problem when part such as coil, spark plugs, MAF, O2 , etc start to age it does not work so well.

I have seen this happen before. check air filter and air sensor.

the mounting checked by the mech and he said the mounting still ok....

as there no shaking on idling when the engine already hot.....

i have similar problem, mech say nothing to worry about as long as dun shake after warm up, unless my wallet gatal

Just to share my experience when I just got my car.
There were vibration during start, worse if it is cold. I swapped out 2 of 6 coils, it got a bit better. And not long after that 2 of the coils died one morning. So, there is a good chance that your coils are on the way out, especially if you have more than 80K KM on them.

if its coil, then should be able to feel "not smooth acceleration", i had coil changed after the BMW Scanner detected the error, smooth acceleration but still shake in the morning.

is there anything to do with MAF?
bro, have you clean/change your MAF?

My MAF was changed by previous owner less than a year, and my mech told me not to spray anything onto the MAF, dunno true or not. Then when he felt the jolt when cold engine start, he told me its mounting. once warm up, the jolt hilang.

tonight would clean the MAF then tomorrow to another workshop to check the mounting again....
