Neoh,

if your diagnostic port is located in the engine bay (driver side) then you need the adaptor

20 pins Diagnostic Port in Engine bay

Adaptor - 20 pins to 16 pins adaptor.

If your diagnostic port is located under your dashboard, you dont need the adaptor.

Diagnostic Port inside the car.

Scanner is plugged in directly into the diagnostic Port.

Not sure about your E46/M3 but the live data I got from my E46/Msport is shown below.

Analog Live Data

btw, for T2's m5, the scanner cannot read the Live data from the DME. Same for X3 and X5.

I dont it has anything to do with the scanner but more to do with the type of DME installed in the car.
If the DME support it, then Live data is available.
