my fuel level showing empty with the reserve light "on" even with physical half full tank

open up the fuel level sensor (under back seat)

found 1 wire broken

check potentiometer working or not.....confirm ok

solder back and presto.....working again

checked with bav auto and a new fuel level sensor costs rm 335/- lh or rh same price

btw, check the rubber cushion that support the fuel pump. It could be broken.

If you have time, extend the fuel sender cable. for e36, this is a common problem. the cable will break when you go over a bump due to the short cable.

thanks jarance.yes i did chk the rubber mount and it's good and the reason why the wire snapped was becos it was not secured properly at the last bit and the sloshing of fuel caused the wire to move about and eventually broke,i suspect the last time the fuel pump was repalced ('07 as told by PO) the wire was not secured properly.
