Brothers,My E34 had a rattling sound from the exhaust. Put it on my mini jack @ home to inspect. Found a hook that holds the tailpipe broken. A minor weld job would sort it out. Previously the exhaust had been serviced @ Everco where the tailpipe was replaced. So I thought I pay them a visit to rectify their job. It took them 2 mins to put the car up the hoist, weld the hook and I was done. RM20 for this job!!! Was real pissed as I expected max a RM10 job or at least acknowledge that the tailpipe was replaced there and could have done the 2 min job gratis!!! I will never ever visit these cut throats ever again.Vanos Seal - by far the best and cheapest performance enhancement undertaken on my E38. Car revs, downshifts and puuurrrrsss beautifully now. All this after only 2 days with the new seals. Thanks Herbert for intro to this wonderful product!Cheers - S

RM20 for a anything involving a welder seems normal to me.

What else you gonna do without a welder? :D

rm20 ...biasa larr bro ....even welders in smaller towns also hike up their prices these days ...that is why these days before i let the welder touch anything ..i will ask the quotation first ...cuz everyone can do the work ...

I think RM20 is reasonable.
Don't forget business owners have to pay rental and salaries too!

Brothers,

I agree with all your comments. Maybe dah lama I tak buat kerja welding exhaust, so not familiar with the market!!! But my contention is that these guys after acknowledging that they fixed the tailpipe and the crack in welding is right next to where they welded the new tailpipe, could have done it for free as a gesture or sign of good will. Anyway, their RM20 welding job putus again this am........

Ah! you rempit the car kuat kuat sure cannot tahan. Anyway on a serious note, they should have done a better job.

i've been charged RM30 for almost the same job...maybe when the shop owner saw our car, deep in his heart say "duit sudah mariii"....haha

Certified....United sucks. The welding on my E34 broke some weeks back!!!! Been too busy to get it rectified. This am had some time on the way to the office. Stuck in a jam in KD opposite Sunway Giza. Spotted an exhaust shop, so turned in. The shop was quiet but he had well stocked goods. So I gave it a try. Hoist car up and he said whoever "welding mati" such an exhaust system really "bodoh". He said if I could give him 30 mins, he would "create" a flexible welding joint which will hold the exhaust. I gave him a shot.

30 mins later, job done. In front of my eyes, he spent 20 mins on a machine making a flexi hose with bracket and bolt. Perfect job and cost me RM30!!!! Well spent. This la baru, honest exhaust chap!!!!

Found him by stroke of luck.....next to EON Bank KD.

Do you have a picture of the flexible welding and the welding mati?

Not off the welding mati, but can take one of the welding flexi when the car is hoisted up next. Basically;

Welding mati - a steel plate welded to the tailpipe and chasis. When the exhaust vibrates due to rough/poor gear changes, poor use of clutch etc, it vibrates violently. This will cause the welding mati to break loose and then the exhaust box will vibrate non stop and rattles away

Welding flexi - first a screw is welded on each side of the exhaust box. Then another pair at the chasis. A flexi rubber hose is used to then hold the two screws together in place, which ensures the exhaust box stays in place, at the same time allowing some flexibility for aggresive movements off the exhaust. This assures the pressure on the weld is drastically reduced, thus a longer lasting weld.

This is what I wanted United to do, but they gave me a cock story and charged me RM20 for a weld that lasted all but a week. Even me, someone really non technical on such matters knew the moment I saw the United welding that it wont last a sec!!! Sorry, but really pissed at such poor behaviour

OK, I got the picture of the flexible welding. It is more of the flexible support which hold the tail exhaust pipe/muffler.
something like item, 14, 15, 16,17

It would be interesting to know how BMW originally mounted the exhaust that is spec'ed for the vibration. I thought the exhaust rest on a bracket which is screwed on to the undercarriage and not welded directly to the chassis.

I don't think BMW will use flexible hoses but top job for a "Macgyver" fix!

Top job bro! Yes, it is parts 14 - 17 that holds the muffler/tail-pipe in place and allows the room for flexibility. The ori flexi parts shown in this diagram cant be used for my set-up. The exhaust system on my car has been justly moded by previous owner and thus use of "MaCgyver" techniques, to some extent, necessary...

I was impressed at the skill and ingenuity. Indeed, cant use a bracket due to the moded system. Sometimes, for such jobs, its best to go to a quiet shop and let the guy take his time with the work, IMHO. This kinda work a little leceh, so busy shops dont wanna do this to earn RM30. They rather fit systems in that cost thousands.....
