so, what the fark went wrong with the 8? never quite had the 6's impact... too expensive?! what was it up against (competitors)?

It was designed to run head to head with Merc's SL range. The 8er was good but people preferred the SL cos the 8 costs too much, was not fast enough (at that time), had some bad press on its electronics and did not have a drop top. Popularity dropped so BMW decided to kill the 8-series from production. It still looks good though...

Also been told the car was clumsy/heavy. Handling was not very good. Somehow lacked the character of the 6 series.Not that I don't like the car. I would not refuse it if it were offered to me. But if asked to choose between the 850i and the M6 (e24), I definitely would go the M6 way, notwithstanding that it is older.

Not to forget, when the 8er was introduced Wall Street was still reeling from the 80's crash. Also people were not impressed that the 8er moved away so much from the 6er that people just gave up on the poor car. I'm sure that if they gave the car half the chance they gave the cheaper SL's at the time, I'm sure they would have appreciated the car more. Personally it is one of the BM;s that I still dream off, next to the Z8 and 3.0CSi.

Spotted an 840 Ci bearing plate WKY 3393 parked in Phileo 1, PJ this evening. What a sexy beast indeed. Just had to take a 2nd and a 3rd look.


Does it belong to any forummer?



How much is it going for locally? Looking at the specs, the road tax itself is a killer.
