Okay this thread is to discuss addition of this feature to automatic trans E39 and E46 with paddle shifter (SMG) steering retrofitted. Discussion from another thread.[quote name='zidee;626254]Haiya how my steering nak laku like this. Everyone talking about SMG now..he he. Have to put on eBay I guess.p/s Since we are talking about SMG' date=' another project that me and Haywire is exploring is to re-look into wiring where we do not have have to push our gear stick to S position (+-) to engage the Sport mode. Just simultaneously tap both + and - paddle to engage and dis engage the mode. Anyone out there has done it please share the wiring diagram as i know it has been done out there.[/QUOTE'] [quote name='Ade;626510]u will need to disconnect 3 wires from the steptronic gear and connect it to a microcontroller together with the + and - lines from the paddleshifts. You will need to program the microcontroller to recognize that when both + and - is being engaged means to go into sport mode and the microcontroller will trigger a ground on one of the lines. Have not done anything for this to happen but i think its possible as I've tried manually grounding one of the wires (can't remember which color) and the car recognizes it to go into sport mode.[/QUOTE] [QUOTE=aidilj;626513]Ade' date=' sounds very doable, will be system be ok when both of the inputs are both pulled low to exit sports mode? One or the other mustve take priority. If the shifting logic can handle this already, this can be done with just some relay/transistor, no need for microcontroller.Bro zidee, you highjacked your own thread with SMG discussion..[/QUOTE'] [quote name='Ade;626523]From what i gather is this' date=' 3 wires, 1st wire ground for x milliseconds to upshift, 2nd wire ground x milliseconds to downshift and 3rd wire ground permanent to engage sport mode. The problem is to mirror the 3rd wire permanent ground by flipping the + and - and disengaging that by flipping both + and - again. Perhaps its do-able using transistors and maybe flip-flops, no need to get the bulky relays but I have not thought about the logics to make the transistors work.[/QUOTE'] [quote name='aidilj;626525]Probably a JK FF (7476) will do the trick along with a MOSFET. This mod is doable it seems with glue logic.Based on your info I can cook something up 2moro..[/QUOTE]

Damn man' date=' you guys figure it out and make a circuit for me and bro Zidee. I just learned circuitry during school days and its nowhere on par with you guys' knowledge of circuit making. Please do :D[/QUOTE'] To bro Ade, this is my circuit suggestion for the implementation. Hope you can have a look and verify if my understanding is correct. The divider network may not be necessary if the car electrical is operating at TTL compatible voltage. Thanks

This is how it would work

the logic gate should be NAND right? Also, you should include some capacitors at the input lines of the NAND gate for debounce purposes. The reset pin on the flip flop should be connected to a capacitor to allow reset to initial position when not in used. Other than that, i think its fine. Time to fabricate and test out! The wires should be at 12V, u will need the voltage dividers. Are you planning a Vcc of 5V?

I think NOR is correct, we want a positive edge when both + and - are pulled low. Debounce suggestion is good, I missed that. Thought of the reset, it'll be fun to get random transmission profile on startup, haha. :slug:

The dividers stay then. Vcc should be 5V I think, TTL is cheap, whats on your mind? Next would be component choosing and fabrication! I can't do it since no paddles..:hmpf:

oh..ur nor and my nand is the same...hahaha....anyway, depends on what truth table u are thinking...

fabricate first, test ...then can try out.....i'm sure alot of willing paddlers here...hehe

Code:
nor nand
a b | y a b | y

0 0 | 1 0 0 | 1
0 1 | 0 0 1 | 1
1 0 | 0 1 0 | 1
1 1 | 0 1 1 | 0

If you use NAND then JK FF will toggle everytime you shift, the inputs are active low right?

Yes ! yes ! yes ! .... I know you guys can do it ... let outside world know that Malaysian boleh !

p/s Aidilj is a trained electronic guy. Ade not sure. Haywire...don't be humble la. Although you are an architect..(ops pecah lubang), but you yourself pun sifu. For those who does not know, a seller for a ribbon cable to fix the famous pixel issue on BMW refer back the instruction to fix it at our forum. Thanks to haywire. You should claim commission from the seller...he he

Aik? Since when are they referring to my post? I didnt know that...

Anyway bro Aidilj, where do you stay? If not too far definitely can come over to test the circuit...we need to meet up and sembang2 anyway..

Where will the circuit be installed in the car? Did you try to contact the guy who uploaded the video on youtube..see what he says. But seems like we dont really need him right?

This is the current wiring the the 'normal' SMG tap we are using now if it helps...

Malula show my simple wiring diagram...macam budak sekolah pulak hahahhaa.

The circuit would be small enough to be put inside the gear console. We don't have to contact him, further probing shows that he is from singapore.

Your diagram is correct, need to figure out what the other two wires are. I'm currently reading the legendary mite46 notes here http://e46.mit.edu/PaddleShift_Retrofit_Project.htm

His journey here http://e46.mit.edu/ he even transplanted an M3 engine into his sedan

aidilj, open up the gearbox console and use a multimeter to tap....we will know exactly which wire to connect to as the steptronic switch line.
zidee, was an electronic guy...abit rusty here and there coz now i manage a bunch of them....but i still appreciate these discussions...

Bro haywire, I'm in Penang, a little too far to the valley, but sometimes pass through it to go to hometown like the time where I pick up the BC stalk from zidee. Sure if there is a chance we can meet up and have a chat. Also learnt that zidee is from Penang..

Ade, will see if I have some time over the weekend to check it out. You are well-versed in this field as well, salut.

I'm planning to do a little experiment with switches replacing the paddle to test the circuit out.

Guess after all this findings, it is mandatory for me to get the SSG steering.. :puke:

Deiii bro I'm from Sungai Petani la..my hometown. Bro Zidee I think is from around Tikam Batu/Penang border area. Will be going back next month I think.

Anyway I prefer the SMG steering than the SSG steering. Bro B33Mer has the SSG in his E46.

Can i do this mod in E90 as well? I am currently using M3 Paddleshift retrofitted for nearly 2.5 yrs. Would be good to activate the Manual mode by just flipping either of one paddle.

The current set up we are looking at is actually flipping both the paddle at the same time to activate Sport mode. Deactivation is also done is the same manner. Flipping either paddle to engage sport mode would cause unintentional gear changes in my opinion.

Can't say for sure if the mod can be done for E90, need to study the electronics first. It is relatively simple in E39 and E46, newer models may have funky logic, or not.

Flip one paddle to enter sports mode then both paddles to exit sports mode? Thats doable, different logic though..
