What are your thoughts? Which to buy? Was withc-square at the showroom yesterday chcking out the cars.

Check out the current issue of cars.my magazine - there's a road test comparo between the E60 525i, Merc W211 E280 and Jag S-Type 2.5. After reading it, there's a good chance that you'll swing in favour of the E60 over the W211, especially since in your case it's the E60 530i and not even the E60 525i.

We are die hard BMW fanatics. So the choice will always be the BMW regardless of models.

Let's be objective. A good car is a good car regardless of brand. Have anyone test driven the cars back to back within a few days' time frame? I'm torn

i've tested the e270cdi and 530d back to back, a couple of times before deciding to get the e60..

the e-class's interior is waaaaay nicer than the e60, hands down.. the exterior can still be made to look sporty, yet elegant with either the brabus / amg kit..the e60 is naturally sporty.. looks and the way it drives..

when spending that amount money to get either, i wud want the most out of it.. so a compromise is a must.. :D

bro,
Both are excellent cars but one is to be driven in while the other, you drive it!

WJ, E60 530i with 250+ hp definitely. I have yet to test drive the E280 V6 but I have tested the E240 and it is very comfy and ride is not bad but I prefer the bimmer handling overall. Engine power is nowhere close to Bimmer lar. What is paper spec of the E280 V6?

I believe the E280 has a 3.0L engine.

Read a recent roadtest of the E280 in which the tester complained about the slothful Merc gear box which seemed reluctant to kick down.

Test drive them both, multiple times if you have to.....

The E Class is very well-built and reliable. The facelifted version now comes with uprated suspension and steering to improve driver involvement which is already very good. The E200K will churn out 184 bhp which I think is quite adequate. I think Merc as an owner-proposition is becoming more appealing. Despite being a beemer person, I'll seriously consider the E280. The only drawback is less fun but that doesn't mean it's no fun.

The E-class doesn't get along. I drove it for 10 mins and all sorts of warning lights came on............wj, u know which one I would go for........that's right, Subaru Legacy :p

Surely the ESP warning lights will come out with you mashing the throttle that way. The 240NM of torque comes in very early and there is a flat mountain of torque for quite a while.

Agree with Powerblow, the fun can be fun nevertheless :)

what about comparison in terms of maintanence ?

Maintenance so far has been zero and no quirks encountered. The car is now at 15500 KMs and works like a dream. The experience thus far has been fabulous and you get a feeling that it is built for hard labour..i.e. Robustness that will endure a lot of trashing. Just the kind I like...

Instead of warning lights, the car should be giving me tire smokes, lots of it

I didn't mash the throttle lah, only 75% coming out of the grass :p Besides, how else would I keep up with you in the Subaru???? hehehe

Hee hee...any car will activate the traction control with one wheel on the grass + 76% throttle...

I think we miss our Aflas ya? The goodl ole LSD :)

I totally agree. My dad's E240 has already done more than 100,000 kms over 2 years cos his factory is out of town and the car still performs like new. Robust and well-built it is. I wonder what the price differential is going to be for the facelifted E200K cos with 184 bhp, I should be able to gun down a 318i, hehehehe... < starting fire again >... :p

Guys,

I had the pleasure of driving both the E60 530i M-Sport and the E280 3.0 Sport end 2005..

My opinion when comparing both cars:
Performance - 530i (but you can always install a kompressor on the E280?!:) )
Comfort - E280 (even with Sport Package)
Interior refinement - E280
Sporty look - 530i
GPS - equally reliable
Transmission: E280 , the 7G-tronic is just superb!! U get shift buttons on the wheels some more!!:D
Parking assistance - 530i (How can u not like the visual parking aid?!!:D )

Conclusion:
Both cars are equally impressive! Make your decision based on what you really want/need.
I choosed the 530i because I'm a speed freak and I just loooooooovvee its sexy curves!!:p

Hope this helps..
