The ony VW I can tapau is Wak-Segan .. 1.3 carb .. :dunno:

when this auto journalist took the new Golf5 GTI up to ulu yam with us, the car easily kept up with the fiat coupe 20V turbos. no doubt it's quick!

as for 328i vs Golf GTI, dunno la. both have abundant torque. would be an interesting match. any volunteers? :D

I've not driven the E46 328i nor the GTI, but based on my experience with the E36 328i, I want to ask you, why bother asking such a rhetorical question?

I managed to match my friend's 20v Turbo during our numerous elevated highway sessions in the 328i, but in a place like UY, the 328i'll smell nothing but turbocharged exhaust. In fact, it smelled fabianyee's exhaust too!

hee hee hee.. let's compare specs ... can someone post GTi's specs?

E46 328i (M52B28TU)
193 bhp
280nm torque

Is it safe to assume the Golf will be lighter than the E46? Am wondering coz the Golf IS is rather large car ..

By the way.. I have test drove the Audi A4 2 litre - it has almost identical (a tad higher) specs :

Audi A4 2 litre
197 bhp
280nm torque

Unfortunately, the CVT gearbox seems to suck out a lot of power.. it doesn't feel like a 190bhp+280nm car.

The A4 quattro (same engine - but with good ole auto box) feels somewhat more different ;) Engine noise is rather good too.

Ok I'll bite....

GTi is in a different class of car than the auto E46 328i we get here. Its a hot hatch, and rivals the likes of the Civic-R, Clios, Focus RS etc. The Beemer is in the fast saloons category.

But if you MUST make a comparison, a manual or SMG 330i will likely match the straight line performance of the blown veedub GTi manual/DSG and makan it around the track cos of the RWD and 50/50 config

:D

Thinking of buying a GTI for my wife but she thinks that it looks too much like her current car, the Getz.

Yo Energy,
Isn't the Golf GTI a manual? Can't remember.. but don't imagine it holy for any GTI to be an auto!

(That's like making a automatic M3!)

I think is some sort of auto with pedals on steering.

if performance don't matter, u might want to consider new a-class 170.. going rm175k.. very, very nice from the front and side view.. :D though rear is more like the new mitsu colt.. :(

both are strong cars, no doubt.. though the gti would edge the 328 by a fraction only.. but the e46 would then walk the gti above 160kmh.. i know this from experience.. :D peace..

Dunno man.. I have a gut feel the VW Golf GTI will whip E46 328i's rear boot... the 328i never felt very fast... always seem sluggish...don't know what wrong with the car.. or with me :D

Anyone with a Golf GTI to match?

nah... i doubt it

the fsi should accelerate much quicker
[/quote]
E46 328i manual
0-100km/h 7.1 secs

Golf GTi manual
0-100km/h 6.8 secs

0.3 secs can mean "edge" to some and to others "much quicker". You can judge for yourself la.

Also:
The E46 330i SMG/Manual
0-100km/h 6.6 secs

Golf GTI DSG
0-100km/h 6.6 secs

:) i own a 328i e46 and it does feel sluggish doesn't it? that was the initial impression i got when i first drove it.
but maybe that is just in the mind..i mean the gearbox and engine is so smooth in operations that u get the impression that its sluggish.
strange cuz when i played with a fiat coupe,an impreza and a few other unnamed types although it felt sluggish,i was actually equalling their speed if not faster..
well, underestimate all u want but i'm pretty happy with it.with it i can actually be motoring at quite a brisk pace without my wife ever noticing!!! :nyehehe: ..on whether it'll tapau or be tapau'd by a golf gti(turbo no less!!) i honestly don't know.
i feel they are almost equal in performance and a better driver wud probably be the decider..
lets make it more fun and throw a 156 2.5 into the fray!! HOW NOW?????

From a standstill you'll need a manual gearbox though. The auto version is about 1 sec slower to the century.
