As title mentioned would like to share with others E46 user about the replacement of this part.I just change this part due to the life span of it i guess. FYI my ride millage was just after 180k km.The symptoms is my car stop without any warning while it was on running condition. My fuel gauge still showing 1/4 tank of fuel remain and still can go for 140km. It happen few time to me already, but i am very lucky cause it happen near by the town area. So manage walk to tapau 3 liters of petrol and straight away drive to petrol station for fill up. :smokin:Item 6 and the part number was 16 14 6 766 942 and item 4 part number 16 11 1 184 084

Same problem as mine last time, fuel gauge at half but engine died after cutting off a few times. It is suspected that the sensor hand get stuck so it gives a wrong gas level indication. I was advised to practice filling the tank up and use till empty to exercise the sensor hand.

Currently my problem is the indicator fluctuates up and down when the car is not moving. Cheers.

Had the same issue. Used to drive till the fuel warning indicator lights up. Apparently driving on to such low level (thought wanted to see how far can a full tank go) puts stress on the fuel pump to the point of failure. And about a couple of months back, it failed in early morning rush hour. Changed to a new pump, and now fills up when it reaches 1/4 tank. Was advised by mech not to make a habit out of that.

yes you cant maintain a very low fuel level ie 1/8th below for long because the fuel pump body gets cooled by the touch of the fuel on the outside. prolonged period only over heats the pump and possibly it will seize.

An update after replace my Fuel Pump/Delivery Unit.
Just reached my refill warning lights up last nite since it was not active quite sometimes before i replace this delivery unit.
My fuel gauge became normal back i guess, the warning lights up when it show still have 80km to go.
I am still under observation about this part are the right parts to be replace or not. Since i did read through some posting from E46 Fanatic :
http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=738747

Will update on next refill and the fuel gauge indication reading.

Bro, I heard it's not such a good thing to let your car fuel tank to go too low on petrol. It will somehow cause some degree of "stress" to your fuel pump in the long run during startup especially when you seldom start your car (e.g.: Weekend ride only). Just to share lah.

Thanks for the advise bro, FYI this is my daily horse and i use to fill up when my fuel warning lights up. If such the case i think i need to change my refill habit. I have no experience keep the fuel tank too low will kong the fuel pump, that's why i use to refill the petrol once the indicator lights up.
Thnks again for the information bro.

Bro Alex,
I just changed my spark plugs and Camshaft sensor few days ago...
but just now when i turning into a petrol station...my engine died when the car is still moving but in a very slow speed like 20 or 30kmh...i tried to start up the engine again,it started but it died straight away...i tried to start again and push acceleration but feel like it dont have enough fuel when i acceleration and the engine died again when i dont do acceleration...please take note that my car is in full tank that time...
the strange thing,i took my key out and put in to start the engine again...THIS TIME it GO BACK TO NORMAL...
I called my mech,he said maybe it's the fuel pump problem...guys,do u think so? or maybe it's another part which caused this??
PLease help...

Most of the time when the car stalled or seem to run out of petrol when the fuel guage show OK,
the problem is due to the suction jetting pump.
(see item3 of the above)

You can use the OBD special function to check the fuel level of the right tank (driver) and left tank (passenger).
If the left tank always seem to be higher (>25L) than the right tank (

Bro try to get your car for diagnosis and see your car have tis fault codes:
7E [126] Activation Solenoid valve, tank-leak diagnosis pump
7F [127] Activation Solenoid valve, suction pump
Refer my posting #53: http://www.bmwclubmalaysia.com/forums/showthread.php?40349-Feedback-on-BMW-Scanner/page6

I am having this fault code since last Feb and it can't be erase from the diagnostic tools.

Bro sorry no idea about your fault code, as what i check from the official list of fault codes ODB II code list it was some thing related to your O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 2).
Why not get your advice from your mechanic ?

No worry it is nothing to be hi-jack the thread, we are here to sharing information with our rides.

Can some body known about this fault code pls..do give their advice to our bro cythomas83

bro alex...
i changed my O2 sensor already...now no more appear that fault code anymore...
BUT...NEW CODE CAME OUT... "171 Fuel Power System"
my mech advised me to change the fuel pump...so alex, how much u changed that?

This is my habit too... wa lan nehh... can damaged the pump mehh...

Alex,

Nice write up and pictures. Thanks for sharing.

Btw, I usually use a Ohmmeter to measure the resistance.

I thought i was the one with the problem but i guess you guys faced the same thing. When I got hold of my car the first time, i pumped up full petrol and off course took it to the mech and the fuel pump was replaced. I drove the car to KLIA and back and when i was reaching BU, i saw the indicator lighted up. Meter was a bit below the quarter level. I pressed on and my car was jerking and totally lost of power. I told myself it couldnt be running out of petrol. Kept starting the car and accelerated for less then 10m, the car stalled. Luckily, the petrol station was just across the street, ran there and temp filled up the car and drove to the petrol station to fill up. I had like 420km on the mileage only and pumped about 53L of petrol. Our ride should have a 63L petrol tank, i.e. what happened to my 10L of petrol?

Thanks for the info here all sifus, now i know the problem. At the moment, i just ignore this problem and will always fill up my petrol before it even touches the quarter level line.
