E46 2002-2004 (2.0) vs E46 2000-2001(1.9)

Hi ppl,New here. Will be receiving my UDM this weekend. Can't wait. It's only 2nd hand though but what the heck ! Its still my dream machine Now my question is, which has lower maintenance costs? E46 2000-2001 (1.9) or E46 2002-2004(2.0)? Mine is a 2000 (1.9) with only 62K Km from AB Glen.Seeking the guidance of the experienced sifus here... :top:

i would think the 1.9 will cost less to maintain? it's not the vanos type which has got more tech stuff going on.
Although I think cost of maintenance is more related to driving styles of previous and current owners.

anyways i am not really an expert but reckon the cost of maintenance should be about the same but again as guru said it all depends on the driving styles of the owners.

Yes, the 1.9 engine maintenance is lowest because its the E36 engine. Far more less sensors than the 2.0 engine. Far more less horse power, thus engine longer life too!!

firstly, do intro yourself at the newbie thread. Then come to TT and become official member.

You have made a choice of the 1.9 e46. maintenance will entirely depend on you. e36 may have a higher maintenance and e90 may have a lower maintenance depending on the owner/driver/user.

engine wise, the 1.9 would be less of a problem as compared to the 2.0. whether it is under power or not, depends on what you want. of course the 1.9 can't go 0 to 100 as fast as a 2.5 or 3.0 etc. but the 1.9 can still do 190 comfortably as compared to other makes of 2.0's. Again depends on what you are looking for in the car. Whether more gas or not, also depends, some can get below 9km/l whereas others can get above 9km/l depending on the driver. but then again, 1.9 would consume less generally as compared to higher c.c's and btw, petrol prices are rising.

My Tiptronic Gear knob won't stay at Sport mode. It flips back to D everytime its physically pushed to sport/tiptronic/(right). It's like there's some 'catch' problem .

Anyone had this issue before ? What was the cause? How much to repair? I need to know this coz I'm taking delivery of my ride this Saturday from AB and they say they'll fix it. But to counter check what they did just to be sure, some info and help required, thanks sifu.

if they don't fix your gear problem, don't take delivery la bro.... insist on it being rectified and warrantified. otherwise why buy from ab. grey importer pun banyak, like where i got mine.....

OK bro, I'll make sure that they give me a warranty on that issue. Btw, I'm getting real good customer service from AB. This seems contrary to what some have experienced. Good follow up , on time calls and document submissions etc and most important of all very humble and nice people. I'm right now dealing with Sanjay. Hope this continues and others can also enjoy the hospitality.

N42 will pay more visit to workshops if you are pretty unlucky!

bhp don't really tell the entire story. Torque figure play important aspect in our daily commuting more. How often you red-line to push extra hp out, compare to stop start traffic?

I'm beginning to question latest technology, it should be more economical even with more power and weight, but not sure on the reliability aspect. Latest production philosophy seems to have more concern in cost saving in production, environment, and cross-platform savings. What impact those have on our latest technology cars & parts shelf-life. You should've notice that there's a different batch with glass and plastic head lights, not sure what's the reason for the direction with plastic headlights.

I'm still in between opinion over my drive-by-wire throttle system and behavior.

Plastic or polycarbonate headlights is because of (not mistaken) America wanted it for road safety. All cars imported into America after certain year must adhere to the rules.

When smashed in accidents, bits and pieces is less harmful compare to glasses. Try smashing ur head with a glass ketchup bottle vs a plastic mineral water bottle.. then u know what I'm talking about..

I agree on the tourque comment. The 1.9 has slightly more tourque than the 2.0 in the lower revs. Off course the 2.0 excels in the higher range. This is based on my test drive of about 8 cars, 3 =1.9 and 5=2.0 before I purchased mine.
