e39 Parts and Maintenance Cost

I went to AutoPex only once, and that was for allignment.
Listened to the guy goreng sini, goreng sana about UDM, etc.
After that, showed me the bill = RM 60 for alligment.
Now I don't plan to go there anymore, back to my ol' trusted workshop better.

Are they good ka?

Hmm. Yeah ler. But the guy seems to know a lot about the UDM coz he drives one too. His mechanics seems sincere but all boils down to pricing. He showed me every part he replaced and explained why he told me to replace them. It was logical enough when I saw the equipment and was consistent with what he was saying.

HOWEVER, having said that, I got some PM that says I was overcharged and I could have gone for OEM parts which were much cheaper. I think If I add it all, I could have saved up to 20% of the bill probably. So, I will try another place next time. They seem to have all the equipment though like the computers and stuff to read into the UDM. I know those things are not cheap.

For a computer read out, they charge RM 150. Dunno if this was unreasonable.

I did my computer readout + resetting the fault messages for less than RM50.

How's the pricing. Is the pricing I got competitive or not? I actually spent 5088 today. Huaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Dahla nak Raya and all... got to recycle my Baju Melayu this year. I will put up the details of each component replaced and pricing for everybody's benefit.

When I got back though, the stupid ABS and ASC lights came back on. So gotta go back and check.

Next up is the Steering Rack at 1200 plus servicing my brake calipers (supposed to do this every 45k I was told) and front discs. This one all bila get my commission lah.

ABS & ASC lights on indicates that your ABS control unit is busted and your speedo meter will not function only your rpm meter will function. After some time you gear will lock into 3rd gear. The ABS control unit Coat about RM 3k OEM. You may need to replace it. Hopefully it just your ABS senseor but i doubt it. GEt it check do a mordik the fault shoult say ABD speed sensor Left rear. Its no use changing the sensor you have to change the ABS controll unit. The reason it gets busted is because it is too close to the exhaust manifold.

Just had my 525i sent for alignment...charged RM107 (RM32 for alignment, RM70 for camber adjustment, RM5 service tax).

It that reasonable?

You are right bro. I stop going to Lim Tayar in TTDI K.L a long time ago. They always want to "adjust" my camber for no apparent reason. I guess they make more money by doing so.

e39 Second Round at the Doctors

Ok, am mentally preparing for a second round at the workshop to explore and maybe change the following:

1. My steering rack is wet, I assume coz of leaking hoses for power steering etc. Should I change thw whole rack or what? Steering feels heavy etc.

2. Relating to the above, the tyre guys tell me I need to change some steering in-ball or something as it has worn as they say that alignment will not be perfect and that steering may shake at high speeds. Betul ka?

3. The dreaded ABS, ASC thing is haunting me with the second level of symptoms - first they are almost always on these days. Second, the speedometer and fuel economy indicator sometimes don't work. The next and final seal in the coffin would be the car stuck in 3rd gear, I was told. Not happened yet. So should I buy recon ABS module or new? How much for each?

4. Need to service brake calipers and change front brake discs

5. Should I change ATF as well?

6. My front driver power window looks as if its at the twilight of its career as well. So... can service ka? Or need to buy new/recond ones?


My question is, given that I went to a workshop that I was unfamiliar with and kena tibai with 5k the last time, WHERE should I go this time. WHO should I talk to and HOW MUCH will the above cost me at a ballpark? Even better still, any volunteers to introduce me to their relaible and non-ketuk mechanic this week? I want to make sure the work is good and the price is right. Please assist guys.

When the above is done, I assume that my ride will have NOTHHING else to change so that I can look into body kits next.

FYI, just did a really good diagnostic with this Sifu. Wonderful. Now I know the true meaning of this club. Not just blah blah blah online but really commited to the cause.

Now after that diagnostic, I will call you again later this week to do it. Besok pun boleh kalau Tuan Haji Sifu free. May do all the others bar the ABS Module before my trip to JB lah. Itu 3.45k macam susah want to come out of my wallet at this point though will do if no other option by next week.

The price is reasonable but, why must you adjust the camber?

Well...I'm not sure...but that's what the mechanic said in response to the machine reading. My steering was pointing at 5-minute. I suspect the misalignment came about when I sent my car for some checking at another workshop. They of course denied.

Actually i am really looking out to go to one of the TT session. The only time I managed to join the group was when the 5ers had a drive to a home for some charity work then makan in cyber and putrajaya. It was really good! But timing always tak kena for TT for whatever reason.

looks pretty scary. There are some items that are on the high side the spark plugs what brand did you use. NGK or Bosch

Went to Stuttgart today and changed my ABS module finally. Also changed the tie rod. The guy told me that I needed to change my steering rack coz leaking everywhere. Therefore the initial diagnostic slightly inaccurate but could not change in time today. I will do this at another workshoplah. Probably cheaper. Got a good deal on the module methinks, gave me a good discount from the origianallt quoted price. Got it at RM 2850. Add 250 labour to that.

BTW, has anyone changed the power window for the driver door? Mine is slowly but SURELY dying. Does not close properly. Any quickfixes or cheaper alternatives (and dun ask me to open door at the parking ticket booths or tolls).
