E36 Gear Box Problem

Hello Geng, Please help me, i faced a problem with my UDM E36 gear box. Sometime it happened, 2nd gear cannot change to 3rd gear. Its become to free gear. When that time happened, i saw the MPG meter static at 30mpg and the RPM increase to 3.5 and the gear will change to free. What i have done, change again gear box oil, and change gear box oil filter. But still the same. Previous when i diagnose, O2 sensor fault, but now 3 4 time i check diagnose, O2 sensor fault wont come out. I am not sure O2 sensor still fault or not. Help meeee. TQ Ferry

Sounds like your clutch is slipping. Time for an overhaul if changing your oil and gb filter doesn't improve the situation.

symtoms sounds like a possible valve sticking
you may have to change the oil a few times, or as per Dinan, overhaul the valve body

well ferry,from what i can see here.its true like one of our member said,ur clutch is slipping.well first thing u could do is try to smell ur current atf.if it does smell like burn smell,that means ur cluctch plate as burn out.

well u can try somethin b4 change or rebulit the gearbox.

1.throw out the atf,change the gearbox filter n fill up wit the same gread of atf but the cheap ones.ie space oil.as long as same gread as oem is ok.maybe urs will be dexron 3 i guess.

2.use that for few days..and drain all out again..

3.this time get "LUBE GUARD" additives for ur kind of gearbox

4.then top up the rest wit original bmw atf or some other that same gread n quality

try this out.u might could save that gearbox for few more miles.at least 1-2 years.

i did mine.n is already been one year plus.still running like 75% new..

I will pm Vincent and Teejay once i need it. Anyway thank for your response. For last choice option, I will change / trade-in gearbox and get the recond from my mechanic. The price is about RM4500.00, it is reasonable price for 318i(A) ? One thing i didn't heard any sound at my gearbox, like gear broken or feel kasar.... My friend check, gearbox cantik. Still tgh cari problem becoz the problem happend "kadang-kadang".

Other things which is suspected faulty, i try to discuss with my mechanic to replace secondhand parts and see the performance, once ok, i will pay for replacement parts and otherwise i will pay for labour.

One thing need to ask. Ada satu botol panjang dekat dengan air filter, org kata corban filter, ada possibility benda tu kotor or sumbat, thats why O2 Sensor detected problem.?? donno

I will try. ATF already change using dexron 3 type. Previous ATF no burn smile. My gearbox is auto.

Bro I had the same prob on my e36 coupe, the gear slips and it goes to second or free or limp mode they called it. Sold my car and had the gearbox overhauled in a Seong Hoe Motors in Melaka, prob still persist!

The best option is just get a rebuild gearbox to solve the prob!

Hey Ferry,

Thats the exact symptoms I had before I had to get another gearbox. It could be 1 of 2, the first is check if your ATF is dark/burnt, if it is then you need another gearbox. If its not, then its probably a sensor or something else.

I went through that 2-3 months before I had to eventually get another gearbox. The first time it happened I can still change from gear 2 to 3 sometimes, but the last time I couldnt change to 3 at all and the gearbox orange light it always lit, so I had to manually put it to gear 2 to drive to the mechanic - or it will keep slipping.

I had mine done for RM2.8K at Jitra Kedah. Its not a total rebuild, the mechanic changed the seals, cluctch plate, and some other misc items. And its working fine so far.

FYI.

my car E36 first model UK year 91, the meter board don't have gearbox check light. i have tried put the bulb but still won't out. during the gearbox become crazy, the reading/door light become on and "ting-ting alarm" sound come out.

The main reason I sold the car is becoz of the damn gbox, still today the new buyer have not resolve the prob despite overhaul, if I were you, get a rebuild unit which comes with a 3-6 mths warranty. Price varies, the last time 2 years back was about RM4k now maybe RM5k the last I check

i have check a price for gearbox complete set overhauld kit is about RM700 plus. the mechanic charge complete overhauld is a round RM3K plus ( supply and overhauld )...

is that price is resoanable??

Price sound okey but make sure the mech is experience enuf for the overhauld......Go for GB specialist instead of normal BMW mech i would say....

IMHO, been to a number of gear box specialist and i think that mscope in batu caves is one of the best.

When it comes to price, you should also find out if the price is inclusive of the torque convertor or just the gearbox. That's one of the main reasons that prices varies.

last i diagnost my E36, no gear box fault code but "speed motoring fault" come out. is there anybony experience on that?? . becoz i am afraid that actually my gbox no problem. previously my waja, speedo sensor problem also kacau gear box. we can see at speedo meter giler, but my e36 speedo meter seen macam ok. maybe sensor giler kot, becoz gear cant change also sometime. when i rev tekannn... changing gear ok.

just need to clarify first be4 dumm some money to my gearbox. heeheee
