I mean in terms of handling. When Audi TT first came out in 1998/9, it was found to have a tendency to incur accidents that resulted in some fatalities. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audi_TT). which they then resolved by putting in the small boot spoiler, it seems.I was wondering whether the 1 series also have the same tendencies not in high speed like the audi tt but also at low speeds. because i have heard many stories about 1 series getting into accidents whilst being driven by a competent driver. even resulting in injury to some auto bavaria sales people. is this true? both about the accident happening and about its handling tendencies. because one guy i know who wanted to buy one for his daughter, changed his mind and bought mini instead due to all this "hearsay" about 1 series 'handling characteristic'. not wanting to dis bmw, afterall it is known as the ultimate driving machine. but just want to know is there any truth about its characteristic or the 'accidents'.anyone?

I have been driving my 1er for about 1 year now and have not gotten into any accidents (touch wood!), though I do consider myself a safe driver, with occasional race-boy urge when I see a corner! So I'm not sure where these rumours are from.

I have no issues with my trixie. Handling is superb at high speed even at corners.

These are all performance cars we are talking about with sophisticated features to keep the wheels on the ground.. drivers always neglect on improving their driving skill and thought getting a super car, they can go super fast...

Electronics can only help but won't drive the car by itself.

Most car's suspension are not tuned for high speed > 180kph drive because of comfort issue.. and on Malaysian road, there's many death traps and if you are not familiar with these roads, it spell disasters too! That's why Ferrari also can crash on Malaysian highways.

If you think the Malaysian driving instructor has equipped you such skills when they pass your driving license, then you are fooling yourself. They didn't even teach us how to hold the steering and how to change hand! Hand signals maybe.. :p

Invest in the BMW Advance Driving lesson if you can afford it, you will discover a lot more in proper car handling..

Remember, upgrade your driving skill before upgrading your car! :D .. then only you are a "responsible upgrader".. :D

I have been driving for more than 20 years and I have to admit I'm still learning.. still can't get rid of the "fish tail" -_-

To appreciate the handling characteristics of a BMW, u must drive other cars first for couple of years especially FWD.. then u know how great is a balanced weight chassis car handles.. :D

jackson,
care to enlighten us on the source of the rumours? :)

so far...from my own personal experience, my 1series handles superbly. On the Plus highway, at speeds above 150-160km/h, it feels stable (just like driving a honda crv at 100km/h).
The emergency braking is superb too. Had 3 emergency braking experience due to dimwitted motor cyclists, and it stops when u want it to stop. 2 thumbs up

hi, thanks for the speedy replies, like the cars u guys drive :) whilst i appreciate the replies, i just want to know whether this rumor is an unfounded rumor or is actually based on a thinly veiled fact.

pion, i can't say who the source of the rumor is because i dont know, after all can anyone say who is the source of any rumor? :) as with most rumors, i heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend, etc.

astroboy, the 'fish tail' sometimes you get. happens at high speed or low speed cornering or at slippery corners? and i guess its not only you that gets it. other rear wheel drive owners also get it?

getting fishtail is normal in a RWD car if one breached the limit of traction..

Electronic Driver's aids cannot save one from all situations if he/she is driving too aggressively.. ;) Go for advance driver training to learn how to properly react in such situation... Either driver's training like BMW's Advance Driver Training or others out there...

Haha.... the "fish tail" experience I get is not from my E90 la.. Its actually from my 1.3 RWD auto mini MPV that is running a pretty worn out rear tyres, on purpose, no electronic stability aid.. :p ... and its not high speed la, just having some fun on the wet when the roads are empty..

If you don't push your car to the limit, you will never know how capable your car is... same goes with your driving skills. I rather doing it on an empty road to brush up my lousy driving skill than being caught unprepared.. :D

RWD rocks! yet... put me behind the steering wheels of a Ferrari, I think can accident oso.. :p

problem wth my 1 series

hi guys, fuad here from shah alam. i guess i can say im a proud owner of a new 5 doors 1 series 118. its only a couple of month but enjoying very day with it. anyhow, here my problem, my car seems to 'bounce' a lot in bumpy roads, sort of like when your absorber is out. my fiance keeps complaining about the 'condition' coz its making her dizzy, and i do agree after experiencing myself, the worst 'bouncing' incidence when i was on the highway, going back from LCC yesterday. Another problem is, for example a side of the road is un-even (lets say the right side of the road was jst tar) and im coming from the left side wanting to enter the right side, but as im about to cross the border btw the 'old' tar wth the new one, my wheels seem to have a 'life' of its own by having the tendency to go back to the other side of the road. are those 2 characters normal in a 1 series. Im always very afraid to hit the gas when ever its raining or i know the road is unever. coz some time the wheels act as if its skidding on a puddle of water when ever theres uneven road. another thing is, there seem to be small squeaky noise between the top part of rubber seam wth the front left and right side of the glass door.. even thought my old car (gen-2) has its own 'squeaky' problem but i have never experience this condition with a new car before. i mean this is a BMW mah, it shouldn't have squeaky problem! can some body help me wth this?

P/s: where do i go if i want to take an advance driving skill n how much does it cost?

Mainly it's run-flat tires dude!

If you really hate it, change it to normal tires...

i have 118 for a yr.

notice the recommended tyre pressure is quite high compared to other car that i have...because they are keras, sort of, plus uneven road, that cud be the reason of that bumpy ride. try over inflate tyres for other cars, u'll feel the same. i guess that's how the car was designed....europe road are much better than here. so have to live with it here in msia.

happy with the car so far.

i took advanced driving school in shah alam....near giant there. company name SADRA. not sure if they still exist. quite gud.

Fuad,
First of all CONGRATS on yr new car :top:
..the "bounce" could be due to the wrong tyre pressure. Since your car is under warranty u should be able to get it sorted out free of charge.
Mine has some rattle at the black high gloss trim area on the dashboard which was there since i got the car new. Have yet to find the time to get the dealer to sort it out. I believe th rattle is caused by the clips holding the trim.
Wat's the colour of yr car? Yr 2008 make? :)
Anyway, its a darn fun car to drive.
