completely built up and completely knocked down.

CBU = car imported fully built.
CKD = all the components, and parts needed to build a complete car, brought into the country, and assembled in an assembly plant. Just like a tamiya car kit.

In Bmw's case, assembled in the Amim Holdings plant in shah alam, facing UMW toyota HQ. This incidentally, is the Ford plant.

On CBU/CKD issues, need to be careful that the CBU specs are suitable for Malaysia. If imported new, then usually the CBU version is suited to malaysia, if recond, some UK versions are not fully tropicalised (smaller radiator/air cond cooling coil, heaters in seats, etc). Japanese recond CBUs may be better for local use. That's why CKD versions are 'safer' to buy, they are spec for Malaysia and you can also verify their mileage/service history with the agent.

go to a bmw workshop with modic3 or gt1 and ask them to look for the true milage... they'll know what to do.

Not only is CKD assembled here, it has a certain percentage of locally made products.... ie the carpets,rims, leather seats, windows etc etc
SO, on top of poor QC and workmanship, you have to worry about crappy components.

Agreed, and I think the govt set the guidelines as 30% must be local content. So usually things like tyres, etc are local ones

Actually, BMW seems to take a lot of pride in what gets localized and what is within original specs. Tyres for one is definitely not localized for CKD BMWs, as it affects performance, drivabality and overall enjoyment of the car. Other things like shocks, springs, brakes, tranny, engine parts, lights, etc are rarely swapped for localised parts. Things like leather seats, carpets, seatbelts, side windows get localized.
