.. didnt think about this until wireman made statement saying the older LM ( low maintenance) type battery is better - in the long run compared to the MF (maintenance free) type, any views on this ?

LM battery needs to be checked fortnightly for electrolyte levels and before it reaches the end of its lifespan you are forewarned by weaker starting.

MF battery is a fit and forget unit, no checking needed at all and no warning when it is at the end of its life...just kapoooot!

LM emits some corrosive gas and requires ducting in enclosures while MF is virtually fully sealed and is perfect for use in the boot or enclosed areas.

There, so you decide.....

was using LM when battery in engine bay but switched to MF after moving battery to under rear seat. LM lifespan in my car normally 2-3 years but maybe that's bcos the engine bay for e34 is so freaking hot!

MF definately better but buy from trusted manufacturers. LM sometimes prone to leakage and this is no good for those with their batteries under the seat or in the trunk, premature corrosion ler.....

well i guess that answers that question - MF it is then....Tks guys.

I have been using the MF, feel that it does last longer! My camry comes with LM planned to get it repolaced once kaput!

MF & LM is exactly the same; the only major different is the MF is sealed. Take note that if there is leak, electrolyte level in MF will drop just like LM batteries but theoretically there must be gas expulsion from the battery due to recharging of the battery (water split into hydrogen and oxygen), and MF cost more than LM. Usage life is about the same. My LM can last more than 3 year and still in good shape, but just changed due to preventive maintenance measures.
