Hi all Beemers,I am Zack from KL. I am planning to get an E39 525 (coz I heard that's the best) year 2000 and above with double vanos. This is my first time with 5 series. Have had an E46 2002 318i in the UK when I was working there.May I know what to look for? FYI I have looked at a couple of cars both were 520i and 523i with 2.0 and 2.5cc respectively. The yr 2000/05 523i i looked was the best with 152k KMs UK specSeems honest and original.Everything looks ok except for these :1)It came with only 1 remote key and may I know how much an orginal BMW key should have? My previous E46 came 2 remote keys, 1 service key (no remote and cant open the glovebox) and 1 valet plastic key. Should E39 be the same?2) The engine wasn't that smooth. Seems to be running on 5 cylinders if I can say it that way. The dealer wasn't so sure as he is not a BMW expert. 3) And my other prefs that it didnt have is the dealer said the owner has lost the manual booklet and service history. I am a lil anal abt it so I tried to push the price down.4) The radio display (BMW professional) was missing some pixels at the clock so i can only half of digit 2.5) It came with power rear blinds and electric memory seat but the passenger wing mirror didnt dip when I put reverse,I think it should do that right?6) rear right passenger windows doesn't work. Perhaps just the motor?Any comments on the above concerns? Should I be worried. After I tested him with my price, seemed he was willing to let go at RM50k-ish I think but I wasn't prepared to commit Any particular attention I should look for apart from normal periodic maintenance?Any advice kindly appreciated. Thanks

I suggest you go for the M54 engine, after year 2001. The 520i comes in 2.2 litre with adequate power for daily usage. If you wish for higher capacity, the 525i (M54 engine) would be ideal. In my opinion, the local CKD is the safest bet.

The yr 2000/05 523i i looked was the best with 152k KMs UK specSeems honest and original.Everything looks ok except for these :

1)It came with only 1 remote key and may I know how much an orginal BMW key should have? My previous E46 came 2 remote keys, 1 service key (no remote and cant open the glovebox) and 1 valet plastic key. Should E39 be the same?
Yes, E39 comes with 4 keys

Perhaps other E39 sifus could add on to the above?
2) The engine wasn't that smooth. Seems to be running on 5 cylinders if I can say it that way. The dealer wasn't so sure as he is not a BMW expert.
Could be the one of the injector not working but better get it checked

3) And my other prefs that it didnt have is the dealer said the owner has lost the manual booklet and service history. I am a lil anal abt it so I tried to push the price down.
This does not sound too good, a bit fishy?

4) The radio display (BMW professional) was missing some pixels at the clock so i can only half of digit 2.
Yes, the missing pixels are a common thing in aging E39

5) It came with power rear blinds and electric memory seat but the passenger wing mirror didnt dip when I put reverse,I think it should do that right?
Yes, the wing mirror should dip. Did you put the wing mirror adjustment switch to the right instead of left?

6) rear right passenger windows doesn't work. Perhaps just the motor?
Maybe but could be other bracket too?

Any comments on the above concerns? Should I be worried. After I tested him with my price, seemed he was willing to let go at RM50k-ish I think but I wasn't prepared to commit
Price appeared Ok

Any particular attention I should look for apart from normal periodic maintenance?
Any oil leaking? Power steering rack OK?

U can ask Tweiboon to duplicate the master key. I have 2 maters keys, 2 service keys and 1 valet key. Ask mechanic for others question.

Thanks all for the quick reply.

Yes I did put the mirror adjust switch to the left before engaging R. Mercs also have the same procedure.

No leak was visible at the time of inspection. I have snapped the engine bay picture. The car is silver but the engine bay looks white. Is this normal? Even the inside front bonet looks white. I also took the VIN.

I'd send to a nearby BMW specialist (please do a search and check out the workshop thread) for diagnosis. BMW specialist will use computer diagnostics to tell whether the mileage is genuine and also to determine whether there's any serious fault to the entire car's electronics. I'm not sure how much they'd charge though, I guess that depends on the workshop and foreman himself.

found one! Booked!

Hi all,
I found this one. Fell in love with it. 3 owners frm new. Ex-AB demo car. Sold to this guy then transferred to his wife.
year 2002 local 525i with 152k KMS with electric front seats with memory for driver.Black leather interior

Asking price was RM75k but I managed to get RM72k after pointing out the obvious such as some small tear in the front passenger seats and some missing pixels on the radio plus the remote key is not working.

+ others:
PDC front and rear
18 inch
Led tail light (is this standard from AB?)
tilting when reverse (but just found out you need to put the mirror adjust switch to the right rather than left like Mercs)

The only down side is that it only came with 1 diamond key and even that is not working remotely. The dealer promised to get me a new set and charge the current set.

And of course it came with a manual but no service history. I hope someone can help me with that after I got the car.

See pics attached. and please comment.

Feedbacks welcome before I submit for the loan tomorrow.

Cheers guys!View attachment 19896View attachment 19895View attachment 19894

So is this ok for the price?

I have inspected the car. Ni serious accident damage but I can see the rear right side was grazed and can see the filler bits inside above the battery.

But the boot floor still intact with no signs of repair. But used cars will have some issues, not perfect but this gave me some room for bargaining but ot by much.

I think I will bite the bullet and go for this E39.

Cheers.
