For many, I think our watches are not like our cars. We will sell our car to get a new one.

Like many, I have never sold my watches but rather kept adding to my collection. Many of my earlier watches are just thrown into the cupboard and never to be picked up gain until it is too late. I learnt my lesson.

guys like us ....there's only things we indulge on :

1. watches
2. cars
3. ladies

watches are very subjective .. for me, it's a definition of character and how i value time. it's one of the items that stuck to your body for nearly all the time and that has definitely personal value. i've owned two oris f1 watches, a panerai (2nd hand je) , but nothing as grand as rolex.

not trying to be a show off here, but for genuine buyer/collectors, it's much more towards self satisfaction and your impression towards time.

i've always impressed with the tagline "There's nothing valuable like time " . That simply said it all.

So what do you think of a bimmer driver that wears a QQ or Seiko ? Hmm...

Ya man... please enlighten me.. I'm the one wearing Seiko (not pronounced as "psycho" :D) and has a bank owned E90.. (Cannot afford to buy brand new BMW with cash.. :()

By the way, my E90 just got 2 pieces of brand new Yokohama tyres instead of European brand tyres.. not enough money to even change 4 at one go..

What do u think?! :26:

The irony is that a Seiko probably keeps more accurate time and is more robust than some high end luxury watches with complicated movements. Gotta give it to the Japs for precision engineering!

Luxury watches are about heritage, exclusivity, rarity, movement and some lesser extent accuracy. Mass market battery Quartz watches which have no 2nd hand value are sometimes the most accurate time keepers.

If you view luxury watches as jewelry or even investments which can go up in value, then easier to justify paying the price. If your wife doesn't understand it, give the diamond analogy. Should click with them straightaway...:)

E46Fanatic is absolutely rite.. my trusty quartz seiko and citizen are more accurate that my other watches that cost more than 10 times its price!

I tried the diamond analogy... didn't work...

only time will tell, i have too many friends tell the same thing, why spend so much on watches, it is just for telling time, Seiko will do, and most of them if not all eventually move up the ladder. From seiko to Tag, then Omega to Rolex and Panerai, Breget, AP, etc.. Some are even think of Patek or nothing at all..so will be interesting to come back to this topic in 2020 to see where we are..

hehe.. I figure a Rolex keeper won't come down to my level to explain how his Rolex is better than Seiko..

People buy Rolex definitely expect more than just telling time.. and my expectation of wearing a watch is JUST telling me time with certain durability because I scratch and knock my watch a lot when performing DIY to my car. I don't expect it to appreciate, same with my E90.

Just like telling a guy that treat a car as a transportation from point A to point B to get a BMW. Its different expectation, different target market la.

Let's look at the 2 brands... I doubt they share much similarity.

BMW.................................................................Rolex
Mass production...................................................Limited production
Majority buyer don't expect value appreciation.........Expect appreciation in value
Sport luxury.........................................................Nothing sporty about it
Balance chassis, RWD, good handling car................Accurateness? Value appreciation? Show off? Art?

Mercedes are more suitable for a match for Rolex IMHO as its more luxury than anything else.. U don't put RFT on luxury cars because it will sacrifice comfort.

Those who think they wear Rolex and thus owning a BMW is a good match, I think u bought the wrong car.

I think they match seiko watches better....

BMW.................................................................Seiko
Mass production...................................................Mass production
Majority buyer don't expect value appreciation.........no value appreciation either
Sport luxury.........................................................they got sporty watches (Sportura range) and luxury watches (premier range)
Balance chassis, RWD, good handling car................Super accurate quartz movement, ecodrive

:top: :top:

I think I'll go wear my seiko to the office tomorrow....

oh no no no... i would never, never , ever , equalize a BMW with seiko ... Seiko is like a toyota / honda for me..hehehe...

- BMW is a masterpiece of engineering second to none . They have perfected the philosophy of form and function in one driving product that inspires into our daily lives .. name me any bimmer model that doesn't qualify any of those philosophy.

- I don't intend to dwell too much on watches technology, but yes, the quartz is a brilliant piece of technology that was invented in 1970's ( i guess ) with supreme amount of accuracy. At the end of the day , no matter how it designed, it just tells time and nothing else .

- The automatic watches, however , is something else. Automatic / mechanical watches represent brilliant human , i repeat human technology that comprises of micro mechanical parts which complements each other in perfect harmony... the pursuit of perfection timing differs on the brand, and prices. Of course if you buy one at lelong the watch would offset up to 30 minutes if you don't put it on your wrist! An original Patek Phillepe watch however, would calculate 1 second error within next 600 years . Now that's passion to perfection!

- Coming back on cars, there was one brilliant journalist in top gear UK tested the new BMW M3 and he concluded that the car is brilliant as a white gold rolex. I couldn't agree more .. could you ?

actually if you got a rolex also very good, when you need $ urgently you can sell it easily.just like some tai kor or ah long if they need to run away from the country in a short time normally they sell their rolex.this is what hong kong movie always show.by the way i always like auto watch cause easy to take care no worry about battery.daily i wear seiko 5 auto, just bought oris william f1 collection before c.n.y.i also have swatch auto.i am still waiting time to buy a 2nd hand old school rolex which is like a normal watch,i don't know what model is it.

Seiko-5 is a great watch, especially those made in Japan back in 1980s. There last forever!!

By the way Seiko has got an expensive model too, which is more than Rolex, so dont underestimate Seiko :) This one is selling for RM14,000, which is much more than Rolex SS Datejust/Explorer-I.

That simple classic must be the Manual Widing Rolex 6694 which is selling for Rm3000-3500 now.

Seiko Kinetic is better than Seiko 5, the auto mechanism can last for 3 4 days whereas Seiko 5 u have to use almost everyday, if not it will stop. But off course, a little bit pricey. Kinetic price all start at 4 figures.

I still remember those days ... during my father's time, Citizen was THE watch, hahahaaaa.

Thanks to HK movies, Rolex's branding and marketing efforts to build a sophisticated image has done down the tubes LOL. Such a bad image! Maybe this is the reason why other high end luxury watch brands are so hard to pronounce. Ah Longs and Tai Ko's proof.

kinetic run by capacitor it can last maximum 10 year...auto is forever unless the oil dries up without your notice then the watch can't be use anymore.

Haa?! Only 10 years? In that case I better use up my saving for Kinetic and buy 3 or 4 Seiko 5 instead, heheheee.

Seiko 5 very tahan one ... I think can easily last 3 generations. No problem to pass on to your grandson.
