BMW E32 730i Vibration after install new wheel

Hi guys, Am wondering whether anyone faced this problem before and know the cause of it. I had an original 15inch on my e32 730i and decided to change it for better appearance. It runs smoothly on the old wheel, but upon inserting the new wheel pictured below, it started to have vibration problems at 80-120 kmph when brakes is pressed. The steering wheel will vibrate alot when braking around that speed range, above or below that range; no problem. The new wheel installed was from a previous 5series. I have checked that the specs are the same as my previous rim. Old rim : 7Jx15 ET20 on 205/65/15New rim: 7Jx16 ET20 on 225/55/16 Since the ET are the same, there shouldn't be a problem. I just coulding figure out what went wrong, bear in mind everything is back to normal without vibration after swapping back to the old wheels. Btw the new wheels were fitted with hub centric ring as the centre spigot size is different. If no hubs were fitted then it would judder but why it still judder with hub centric ring on? Hope some sifu out there can help because I don't wanna keep using the old 15 inch wheel.

yea, on and off wheel balancing, in fact on wheel was done twice but could not correct the vibration, alignment has also been done. It just vibrates when u hit the brake from 120-80kmph, once below 80 it will just go off.

I'm sure the rims were checked to see if it's "bengkok" or not right? Could be possible the hub rings are of the wrong size or they're bent etc.

my experience wrong hub ring size and tyre are old i.e expired , i put in my 635csi e24 the same rims and this happen to me too. after i change the four new tyre the problem went away . anyway this is my experience

check for ball joint play.
check brake disc for uniform flat surface.

With lower profile tires, the vibrations will probably magnified

San, in fact when I installed that e39 wheel on my e32, the tyres were 2nd hand with 50% left, didn't know tyres would cause vibration. Maybe its also the hub centric ring like what loafer said.

I am still using the ori 15inch wheel, used 205/65/15 for years, recently changed to 215/65/15 and the same vibration problem occurs even on same wheel. If its same wheel=same et, why vibrate when brake at 120-80kmph? tyre size matters? 215/65 is higher profile than 205/65 so what turbology said should not happen, as with the 205/65 tyres no vibration etc therefore brake disc, upper lower arms, bush all in good condition.

I am planning to change to a 17inch wheel from an e60 style 138, 225/50/17 7.5j et 20, and the centre bore is also the same size as e32, so no hub centric ring required, eliminating the possibility of hub centric ring failure, but am still cautious about it that it might shimmer again and need all the sifu advice available here

Notice that the centre bore of e39 differs to e32 thats why require hub centric ring, but e32 and e60 centre bore are the same, but I still worry it might vibrate for reason unknown to me yet.

This is how, if successful at solving the vibration problem, my modification will look like: Clear tail lights clear size indicator and clear front indicator with style 138 wheels

i had this experience with my e32...that is due to the bengkok rim & old worn tyre...u won't believe it until u change it...

however in ur case...i had a strong feeling that the brake disc is also a factor here...

hi rizal, thx for the feedback. I am gonna get a 17inch style 138 wheels as shown in the picture above, and the next step is to change the front brake disc and see how it goes. This is due to the front brake disc being used for many thousand miles already after around two or three times brake pad changes, can't really remember just remembered mechanic told me the disc was thin enough for time to change but i still tried to use it for another round.

Will do it once I am back in Penang on November and will update the details here.

if you press brake and it judders, it will be your break.

But if you accelerate or just cruise or just let it go, it can be your tires or yr control arm bush. Mine judders from 80 to 120 or 120 to 80 km/h. Found out it's the control arm bush. Also get them to check the tie rod if it has free play. This also will impact on your wheel alignment and balancing.

Then went for balancing and etc. It reduce 80% but still have the vibration from 80 to 120 km/h I suspect it's the tire as it's a al-chepo falken tires.

I m running on 18" btw.

CONFIRM IS THE CENTRE HUB DIAMETER is different.
Your original rim is smaller so you will need a RING.

hi elwine30, thx for the reply, my car is in the workshop now, just came back from uk, I got them to check all the undercariage of my car, so far all the arms are ok including tie rod. so disc will be fixed tmw, so will update on it tmw or sat. I told mechanic to order only genuine bmw disc. It only judders during braking and not crusing, steering wheel will shake badly until i release the brake then it will slowly stop shaking, occurs 120-80kmph.

Joegoi, what you say is right, most bmw have 72.8 centre bore but e39 is the weird one with 74.sth thats why a hub centric ring is required. The last time i fit that e39 wheels, the hub centric ring was there, maybe the tyre shop use the wrong ring size.

got my car back, runs like new after overnight in the workshop one night...got new front brake disc and front brake pad...cost me a bomb..original bmw...disc for total RM1020 and brake pad for RM420.

all the vibration problem gone...due to old brake disc...overused already, was thin like hell, brake pad can say 99.5% used, some portion of it already used until finished, some very thin pad left in the middle of the pad.

So your problem of shaking is due to when you brake.

yaya...only shake when brake...i had this problem 5 years back but was sorted out when found out it was due to uper and lower arm bush and control arm also i think....this time its due to worn out brake disc

for 7, it's recommended to use the original BMW Disc which you made the right choice.

yea...definitely no regrets after changing it...car drives and brakes very steady and smooth...worth every cent!
