Having had the priviledge of being probably the only person in the world to attend both of these events, and competed at both as well I felt the need to make comparisons. I've only decided to do this now because I wanted to wait for all the dust to settle, all the dramas to have been played out and because I've just been busy for the past couple weeks since the event. First of all I was very very impressed with Bimmerfest Malaysia (BM). Everything went very smoothly in my opinion. And the turn out was awesome! Eventhough Bimmerfest USA (BU) had attendance in the thousands and has been an ongoing event for decades, I think everyone involved did Malaysia proud by numbering in the couple hundred. I'm particularly impressed with the community events, the Castrol Futsal thingy and the tire changing event. There was nothing like that at all at BU the times I've attended. The vendors: In BU there were dozens of booths from various companies all famous BMW tuners as well as well known name brands. I understand it would be highly unlikely to get that many in BM but was still happy to see some vendors including Castrol, Meguire's, Garmin and Continental there. Maybe a few more store and workshop vendors would do the trick. Location for BU is crazy, if you dont arrive 7am, you get stuck in traffic until noon, because SO MANY BMWs are jammed up in the hundreds all trying to enter the same parking lot. With BM, not so hard to get in and get parking :) I also liked how BM after event is at the nearby restaurant, can sit, relax, eat and drink away from the sun. At BU there are food vendors that sell hot dogs for almost RM20!! Normal hot dog you know?! Not some super duper giant hot dog with special ingredients!! Prize giving was a much more fun relaxed environment at BM compared to BU which was outside in the hot sun. Of course quality of cars in USA is a bit higher, more cars mean more variety. 2 Isettas showed up, bunch of other rare old school cars, lots and lots of modified cars, especially those that are sponsored by certain tuners and vendors. 4 different supercharger companies came and showed off their project cars. 1 car had both a supercharger AND a turbocharger installed!! But BM had some nice classics, and hopefully more will come next time. So I just want to say congrats, BM wasn't as big or glamorous as BU, but did a very fine job. Hope you guys can build on it for next year!

reserved spot for later.... :listen:

ok finally got the time to continue...My only gripe about BM was the car show. I'm not disappointed about the winners, or the judges, or the judging. I'm only disappointed about the clarity on how the judging was being done. The title said "Best Modded". In BU, the same categories, Best Classic, Best Modern and Best Modified (almost the same, close enough).

Congratulations to all the winners, very deserved and I have no compaints. Initially along with many others, yes I had issues with the Best Modded category, but after clarification with Committee members then I was satisfied with the outcome.

My concern was why wasn't the Best Modded category criteria for winning clarified from the beginning? At BU, and with almost every car show I've participated in, when a title as simple and straight forward as "Best Modded" or "Best Modified" is used it usually means the car with the most stuff done to it. So basically, 1. Exterior (Bodykit) 2. Interior (Seats, etc.) 3. Wheels (Suspension, rims, brakes) 4. ICE (Sound system, DVD player, game consoles, etc.) 5. Engine (turbo, intake, exhaust). If you have the most stuff done to it, and look the best as well, then you should win this trophy.

I personally felt that the 2 Penang Widebodies deserved to win based on the above criteria. They had every category covered and both cars looked amazing.

My car club Europrojektz won 2 out of the 3 "Best Modified" BMWs at BU

This is a widebody 8-series, with crazy sound system and beautifully redone interior.

This is a widebody Z3 with even more crazy sound system, and a lot of interior gadgets.

I believe the E36 conversion to E46 Touring widebody, with giant TV in the trunk and lots of gadgets inside would have beaten the 2 BU winners I showed above. The amount of work done to it is just crazy.

However, based on the criteria BM wanted to have win the Best Modded, it was not to be. It is their show, and their right to choose who should win, I have nothing against that. However, a little clarification BEFORE the event would have been nice, instead of AFTER the whole show with people having to hound the committee members.

They wanted a "Street" or "Mild" class car show, and not a "Wild" one. I asked and they didn't even really care about having a 32" TV in the trunk, or having a PS2 in the glove box. They were more interested in a 'clean-look' exterior.

Like 1 guy said, if he know that his car wasn't what the judge was looking for, he wouldn't have brought his car all the way from Penang just to lose. He would have brought a different car, modified to the judges liking instead, for a better chance.

So my recommendation for the future BM, is to properly clarify what type of show it is and what is the judging criteria. Because even now, there is still no public clarification. People out there still don't know why the Penang widebodies, (and some say my car...thanks!) didn't even place!

Either that or just have a new category. Instead of just having "Best Modded", have "Best Modded - Street (or Mild)" and "Best Modded - Wild". I also heard someone suggest "Best Modded Classic" and "Best Modded Modern", because sometimes it is difficult to compare a modded oldschool 6-series with a modded modern 6-series.

To summarize, Bimmerfest Malaysia was an awesome event with 1 minor misunderstanding that turned into a major issue. I will definately come again next year, because I can only see good things about this event's future. Learn from the mistakes, and build on the positives. One day maybe BM can rival the attendance and prestige of BU ;)

Casanova,

Thank you for your very positive and encouraging comments. Much appreciated.

Also, you should know the prices in USA for BMW's are dirt cheap..1 e92 m3 in Malaysia you can buy 4 in USA LOL..

Cassanova,

Well said...I wrote the samething somewhere but was deleted....
apparently I was doing it on the wrong thread..anyways hope all you have suggested will come to pass for the next BM.

Hey Casanova, I agree with your second posting and have in fact got in touch with the penang-kias to admit we should have made the rules clear from the outset. For the Committee, this is a lesson learnt.
